7 Things You Gotta Do in Bucks County This Weekend (March 22-25)

0

Spring is here…sorta. The east coast is getting slammed with late March snowstorms, and while it’s a bit unfair, we shouldn’t despair. I know there are little buds underneath all that white stuff.

Why? Because spring is here. Mother Nature is gearing up for a much needed season of spring produce, farmers markets and CSAs, wine releases and so much more. Here’s what’s going on this weekend (scroll through!):

Last Chance for Restaurant Week!

Hamilton’s Dinner Menu, Photo Credit: Hamilton’s Grill Room

Thurs, March 22
Delaware River Towns, PA and NJ

Today is your last chance to check out a new or favorite restaurant of the Delaware River towns. Our recommendation? Perhaps you’ll find time to check out Hamilton’s Grill Room in Lambertville. They’re serving up entrees like braised short ribs, crispy duck confit, and grilled Atlantic salmon. Appetizers and desserts are included too! Their restaurant week special is $35 plus tax and gratuity. We don’t want to leave anyone out, so don’t forget that there are plenty of other (tasty) options for restaurant week.

Fish Fry

Fri, March 23, 5 – 7 pm
Riegelsville Fire Company
333 Delaware Rd., Riegelsville, PA

Come and help support your local fire department and share a tasty meal too! All proceeds benefit the firefighting program of Community Fire Company #1, Station 42. This Friday, they’re serving up their fish fry. Enjoy!

Food & Drinks at the Stone’s Throw

Stone's Throw

Fri & Sat, March 23 & 24, 11 am – 11 pm
Shady Brook Farm
931 Stony Hill Rd., Yardley, PA

It’s time to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring (despite the snow on the ground). The winter un-wined is over for the season at the Stone’s Throw (at Shady Brook Farm) but the fun and food isn’t ending. Enjoy locally brewed craft beer, Rose Bank Winery wines, and cocktails made with PA distilled spirits weekdays 11:30 am – 7 pm and Fridays and Saturdays 11:30 am – 11 pm. Tell them Bucks County Taste sent you!

This week’s happy hour specials include $3 drafts, shady mule’s for $7, select bottles and cans for $2 and ½ price appetizers like a cheese board, nachos, and homemade guacamole.

2015 Pinot Noir Release Weekend

Alba Vineyard
Alba Vineyard

Sat & Sun, March 24 & 25, 11 am – 5 pm
Alba Vineyard, Milford, NJ

The 2015 vintage is a true expression of Pinot Noir from the Alba Vineyard estate. The grapes are harvested at the peak of quality in mid-September, fermented in small lots to provide superior extraction of flavor and color, then aged in the highest quality French oak for two years, according to the winery.

As part of their tasting experience, they are pairing this wine with a warm salmon and asparagus tip puff pastry. The wine tasting is $15 a person, 21 and older.

Riesling Release Weekend

Old York Cellars

Sat & Sun, March 24 & 25, 12 – 6 pm & 12 – 5 pm
Old York Cellars, Ringoes, NJ

Yes, another wine release. This time, at Old York Cellars. Be the first to try and buy the latest vintage of this classic semi-sweet Riesling from the vineyard. Sip and enjoy the perfect sweetness with notes of honeydew melon and golden delicious apple and a clean finish.

Wrightstown Farmers Market

Wrightstown Farmers Market

Sat, March 24, 10 am – 12 pm
Barn @ The Gathering
2324 2nd Street Pike, Wrightstown, PA

Spring holidays bring the family together for special meals. The good news is, you can get all of your shopping done at WFM this weekend. They have many seasonal ingredients that you’ll need, including fresh, sweet greens — salad mix, spinach, baby kale, fresh carrots and radishes with tops and so much more. Plus, you’ll want to pick up extra eggs for Easter and Passover. Brenda from Milk House Farm Market has dozens of blue eggs that are so pretty, you don’t even have to dye them!

Matzoh Making Workshop

Sun, March 25, 10:30 – 11:30 am
Bobolink Dairy and Bakehouse, Milford, NJ

Forget the supermarket matzah. Make your own at Bobolink Dairy and Bakehouse in their wood-fired oven. I did this a few years ago and it was so cool! (See the post here). The matzah is made with Emmer Wheat (also known as Farro), some well water and a bit of salt. You then get to roll them out by hand and bake them on the hot stones of Bobolink’s oven.

With the intense heat stored in the hearth, they crisp up and get golden in seconds, little round matzot, which come out looking like they were baked on a hot rock in the Sinai.

This is very much a hands-on event, and even small children are welcome. This is an ideal event for grandparents and grandchildren to do together. Cost is $15 per person and you get to keep the matzoh that you make. Click here to register.

Mulley’s. Hutchinson. Sabrosa. And some Lumpy, Happy Leprechauns. The perfect combo to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this Saturday, March 17, than with the annual tapping of Bucks County Brewery’s own Mulley’s Dry Irish Stout? A good St. Paddy’s stout is all you need to celebrate the holiday (that and some soda bread of course!) The brewery will be pouring pints from a nitro tap starting at 1 pm and using this tasty stout as the foundation for two additional drinks specials:

  • Lumpy Leprechauns: It starts with a half ounce dark chocolate shot cup. To the cup, they add a nip of whiskey, a whip of their house-made Irish Cream, and it’s topped off with the Mulley’s. The concoction is then covered with a dollop of whipped cream and finished with crushed cookie sprinkles.
  • Happy Leprechauns: They start with a pint of Mulley’s Dry Irish Stout and add a shot of their house made Irish Cream.

Then at 6 pm, they’ll fire up the fire pits to keep you warm as Joe Hutchinson fires up his amplifier to play some great live music and Doylestown’s Sabrosa Taqueria rolls in to serve up their delicious tacos. See what’s on tap in the tasting room!

9 Things You Gotta Do in Bucks County This Weekend (March 9 – 11)

0

Okay. It’s all my fault. Last week I mentioned how happy I was that it was March. I actually wrote, “We’ll probably get a March snow storm” but the “end is in sight.” (sigh) Now I’m staring out the window at nearly a foot of snow. But…the lights are (still) on and we are warm, which is more than I can say for earlier this week.

So, what’s there to do this weekend, besides shovel and/or watch snow melt? Lots! Read on and find something tasty to do.

Meet Your Farmer: Chris Whitney, Locktown Farm

by guest blogger Katie Lutzker,

It’s a crisp fall morning. Chris Whitney kneels down and pulls back straw from the beds of his summer garden to reveal beautiful, dark, loose soil, rich in humus. The soil has not been tilled all season.

Locktown Farm field permaculture

Rather than tilling, Chris layers manure, compost and straw over the beds all season. This method allows complex ecosystems of microorganisms, small animals and earthworms to grow stronger each season. In turn, this yields stronger plants, healthier soil, and less work for Chris as a farmer.

Permaculture: Mimicking Nature

At Locktown Farm, his property just outside Lambertville, NJ, Chris is practicing a form of agriculture called permaculture. Most of us are familiar with organic farming practices, but permaculture is more than a set of rules; it is a way of life.

The driving principle behind permaculture is to observe and mimic nature. Nature is in perfect balance; it survives without human involvement. If farms can incorporate permaculture practices, says Chris, it means the farmer will labor less, the plants and soil will be healthier, and there will be significantly less waste.

Additionally, every season that passes using permaculture methods means the ecosystems that are being built become stronger.

The land virtually does the work of tilling and fertilizing itself, freeing Chris up to focus his energy on other projects instead of tilling the land and feeding it fertilizer, making it dependent on methods that are not natural to nature.

Chris Whitney, Locktown Farm, permaculture
Chris Whitney, Locktown Farm

But the goal of permaculture farming is not to sit back and have a farm grow itself. Chris works endlessly on clearing land, chopping wood, building and maintaining his home and business, and growing food. However, he lives harmoniously with nature. He works with the ecosystems that nature has to offer.

What’s a hugelkultur bed?

The no-till method of farming is just one practice of permaculture farming. At Locktown Farm, Chris also practices wild planting and hugelkultur beds, two other permaculture methods.

Hugelkultur beds are no-dig, no-till raised beds. Meaning “hill culture,” the hugelkultur beds are made by mounding branches, leaves, logs, straw and other carbon-rich material, topping the mound with soil and then planting normally.

The benefits are similar to those of the no-till method: less water, less waste, less labor, more nutrients, stronger plants. The gradual decay of wood is a consistent source of nutrients for the plants. The composting wood generates heat and holds moisture. The farmer does not have to fertilize, till, or even bend over far to harvest.

Wild-planting means literally tossing seeds onto land that would otherwise go unused. This helps strengthen the soil, minimize damage by insects and animals, and suppress weeds.

While the work at Locktown Farm never ends, the work is not a fight against nature—Chris is not dealing with problems of nutrient deficiencies, weeds or pests with chemicals. Rather he is working alongside nature to solve these problems.

WWOOFing and Sauerkraut

Chris didn’t come from a farming family. He moved out West as a teenager, and began to WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, a work exchange program) in Hawaii. Through that experience he became serious about gardening, owning land and farming. He and his brother found the land that is now Locktown Farm, and bought it in 2012, both having a similar vision for the land and a connection to it, having grown up close to the area.

Inspired by Masanobu Fukuoka, a revolutionary Japanese rice farmer, and Geoff Lawton, a permaculture enthusiast and teacher, Chris wanted to grow all the food they would consume. However, needing to make an income, he started to sell their sauerkrauts and kombucha at the Wrightstown Farmers Market. Customers loved it.

Locktown Farm pickled foods permaculture

Now, Chris and his team make nearly a dozen varieties of sauerkraut like curry kraut, red cabbage kraut, and many varieties of kimchi. They also make a variety of pickled vegetables including tangy and bright pickled mushrooms, as well as pickled beets. Their kraut, vegetables, and kombucha, flavored by what is seasonally available, make them a unique addition to the Saturday Wrightstown Farmers Market and the Sunday Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers Market.

Their products are also available at a handful of natural markets in Flemington, NJ, and their kombucha is on tap at the Factory Fuel Coffee House also in Flemington, the Sunbeam General Store in Frenchtown, NJ and the Homestead Coffee Roasters in Upper Black Eddy, PA.

Find them online at www.locktownfarm.com.

Bucks Food Calendar: Feb 26, 2018

Weather lore says that if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. I’ve heard that this is an old Pennsylvania saying, and in the 19th century it was used as a prediction contingent on a year’s early March weather.

With all this end-of-month rain, I’m thinking March is definitely coming in like a lion. At least there are plenty of indoor activities happening in and around the Bucks and Hunterdon County area. This week, warm up with a soup cook-off, a cooking dinner and demo, fresh market produce, and a local food drive to help feed the hungry. Keep reading for more things to do!
