Bucks Food Calendar: Feb 5, 2018

Seeing green this morning? Or maybe you’re not quite awake yet like me. To be honest, I’m not a football fan but I am from Philadelphia and I’m so happy for the city. I keep thinking of my dad, who passed away 3 years ago. Wow. He would’ve been sky-high.

So maybe today you’re really not thinking about food — or just coffee. Nevermind, you will eventually be putting something other than dips and chips in your stomach. It’s a quiet week but we’ve still found a few fun things to eat and drink.

Enjoy your week! See you Thursday for Things You Gotta Do This Weekend.

What to eat for Super Bowl LII

0
Chocolate Eagle from Pierre's Chocolates
Chocolate Eagle from Pierre’s Chocolates

It’s not every year that the Eagles make it to the big game. So whether you’re a football fan or not, you’ll probably be at a Super Bowl party this Sunday — or maybe even hosting one.

Eagle fever is running high all over the Delaware Valley and local eateries are getting into the green spirit by offering unique and delicious options for munching during the game. We’ve rounded up some of the best, from dips to barbecue to empanadas to chocolate.

And don’t forget the beer! (No Sam Adams, if you please) See our guide to brews here in the Bucks County Taste Beer Map.

Apparently, even Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa, is an Eagles fan. When asked, “Who will win the Super Bowl?” she answers, “I’m flying with the Eagles with this one because of their relentless defense and the momentum they’ve been riding off their underdog status. E-A-G-L-E-S. Eagles.” What does she know that we don’t?? (Check out Twitter for multiple videos of Alexa giving her opinion.)

Hoagies, cheese steaks and empanadas

Hey Philly fans, if you love a good classic Philly cheese steak, why not try it in an empanada? Empanada Mama is cooking up some Philly Cheesesteak Empanadas, complete with caramelized onions, fontina and mozzarella cheese. Head to their Facebook page for more empanadas and how to order them in time for the big game. Or, just call 215.230.3330 and visit their website at www.yoemama.com for the full menu!

Everyone has their favorite local hoagie and pizza shop. Ours? Pallante’s Italian Deli in Richboro. A tiny storefront that boasts great tomato pies and one of the best hoagies in the Delaware Valley. Stuffed with quality meats, cheeses and vegetables and delivered in a crunchy, South Philly seeded fresh roll. They don’t have a website or much of a Facebook page. You just have to go there (130 Almshouse Road, Store #207, Richboro, PA).

Here’s a link to Pallante’s menu. My favs? The Don Supreme: Proscuitto, sopressata, sharp provolone, roasted peppers; and the Clemenza: Homemade roast beef, broccoli rabe, sharp provolone and long hots.

Now here’s a Super Bowl Menu that’s worth checking out. Comfortfood and Kitchenette is serving up all of your game-day favorites: spinach artichoke dip, warm beer cheese dip, barbecue pulled pork, and of course, wings! See here for the rest of the menu.

Bet you didn’t think of stopping by a farm before the Super Bowl. Blue Moon Acres Farm wants you to visit this weekend to enjoy their big sales on local hot sauce, BBQ sauce, salad dressing and even granola. Visit them at the Stockton Market, or at their farm markets in Pennington and Buckingham.

Time for barbecue

Hickory Kitchen wings

Forgo the chips and dips and bring in barbecue! Ribs, chicken, wings, brisket, pulled pork — is your mouth watering yet? Here’s a pretty comprehensive list of barbecue restaurants and caterers in Bucks County where you can get BBQ for this Sunday. Call soon!

And chocolate, of course

What’s for dessert? Lots of bakeries are serving up delicious cakes but don’t forget the chocolate. Two of our favorite chocolate shops, Pierre’s in New Hope and Raymer’s in Doylestown, have created some fun Eagle-themed confections.

For a full list of chocolatiers in Bucks County (Valentine’s Day is right around the corner…), see our post here.

Super Bowl BBQ

This post was updated 1/30/18

I may not be a football fan but I do enjoy eating. Why not forgo the typical dips and chips and bring in barbecue for the game? Here’s a list of good places in Bucks. Call ahead and place your order soon!

Fat Jack’s BBQ (Morrisville). Fat Jack’s BBQ began in 1993 and now has 5 locations, the most recent in Morrisville, opening in November 2017. The reviews are good as they should be since Fat Jack’s has won more than 200 local and national awards, grand championships and state championships for ribs, shoulder, brisket, chili, wings, sauces and more. See their website or Facebook page for more information.

Hickory Kitchen (Doylestown). This comfy BYOB place is right in the center of Doylestown at Main and Court Streets. In addition to great BBQ and the best wings, their diverse menu has “something for everyone.” See their website for more info and menu. 215.348.5170. See our post all about Hickory Kitchen and all about their wings, which are big and juicy.

Jesse’s Barbecue and Local Market (Souderton). Haven’t had a chance to try it but the reviews look good! See their website or Facebook page.

{more than}>Q (Lambertville). Serving all wood, slow smoked, Texas style BBQ featuring natural and organic meats, and soups and comfort foods made with local and organic produce when possible. Check their Facebook page for updates or call 609.773.0072.

Oink Johnson's BBQ_Jack making ribsOink Johnson’s Southern BBQ (Pipersville). This roadside truck sitting in the parking lot of Jack’s Dog Farm (don’t worry, no BBQ Golden Retriever) has become a local favorite. Jack is out most weekends March through November. I recommend everything — ribs, pulled pork, chicken and all the sides. Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. On Route 611 in Pipersville, just north of Plumsteadville. 215.518.2056. [Note: He won’t be open for Super Bowl weekend but will reopen in April.]

Smoke’n Dudes (Bensalem). This caterer and supplier of high-end meats and barbecue products also offers their award-winning barbecue at their restaurant. See their website for the full catering menu and check their Facebook page for news.

Winckler's Ribs

Winckler’s Ribs (Morrisville). This place was suggested by a Bucks County Taste reader, and, boy, are we glad she told us about it. The ribs may not be what you are used to (a certain Kansas boy I know was not happy) but they are good. Because Mike Winckler braises them first, and then charbroils them, they are not dry and crunchy. But the meat is good, it falls off the bone and the sauce — is fantastic. I’m still trying to figure out what’s in it. Don’t leave there without getting an order of the crawfish hush puppies served with remoulade. Pick up a menu, because the website does not list everything. In Morrisville, just off Bridge St., on 46 Washington St. (if you are coming from the direction of Trenton, you’d make a right off of  Bridge St. onto Washington). Closed Mondays. 215.736.1102.

Correction February 14, 2011: Mike Winckler of Winckler’s Ribs contacted us with the following information. Thanks, Mike!

I do not boil my ribs as it says in your article. I use a braising process. (Braising is similar to cooking in a crock pot, where the liquid never sees a boil, and the cooking is slow, gentle and time-consuming.) We then use wood burning smoke (apple) in the final char-broiling process.

As a professional in the food business for forty years, I find that the process of dry rub and smoking a meat product, although good, does not produce the optimum results that can be achieved with the process that is used at Winckler’s Ribs. Thank you. Any Q’s contact: 215.736.1102.

“The Great Thaw” was nice while it lasted (how is 60 degrees for some “winter weather?”) but now it’s back to chilly mornings and the possibility of another batch of snow showers?! Ugh. Well, keep reading, this guide is better than any weather report you’ll read this week.

January Tidbits: New beginnings and fresh, new food

Look who’s new in town! Welcome a new bakery, a bustling market, farm-to-table restaurants and more in Bucks County.

Goodbye ice cream, hello pastries

Yelp Review, by Gerald S.
Savory and sweet: One Yelp reviewer (Gerald S.) snapped some pictures of the cafe’s delectable pastries and treats.

The former Sweet Pea Ice Cream shop at the Goodnoe Corner shopping center in Newtown Township is no more (sadly), but the good news is a French cafe opened in early December in the same location. Welcome Papillon Cafe.

It marks the fourth French cafe for owner Rabbi Michel Abitbol, who went to culinary school in Paris after moving from Southern Morocco. He eventually moved to New York and now lives in Huntingdon Valley.

Here’s what to expect from the cafe: It’s kosher (certified by International Kosher Council) and organic, features croissants and crepes, along with paninis and salads and homemade coffee. According to their Facebook page,  they plan to hold Shabbat dinners at the cafe twice a month, with themes like French Shabbat or Sephardic Shabbat.

New Hope’s Ferry Market: local and yummy

Bonjour Creperie
Bonjour Creperie’s Jean Pierre created these “S’mores” crepes at the Ferry Market. Bonjour Creperie’s is one of the many vendors of the market.

For the Ferry Market on South Main St. in New Hope, 2018 is a new year, a new Bucks County business celebration. If you haven’t heard of this unique collection of culinary delights, you’ll have to stop in and check out the delicious food vendors, many of whom are local. You can even be a part of the Ferry Market as a guest (AKA a pop-up food vendor).

You’ll find a lot of familiar faces at the market. Many local restaurants and eateries have opened satellite locations there, like Blue Moon Acres Farm, Greenstraw Smoothies (Newtown), Sciascia Confections (Stockton, NJ), Bonjour Creperie (Buckingham), Lima Fusion (El Tule/Quinoa), Moose on the Loose (Cafe Blue Moose), Unionville Vineyards (Ringoes, NJ), Cross Culture Indian, The Pork Shack, and more.

If you have yet to see this local hotspot, stop by on Wednesday, January 24 from 5 – 8 pm for vendor samplings and live music from the Zeke Sky Band. The market is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 7 am to 7 pm (check individual vendor hours on their website).

Small plates and great cocktails at the Salt House

The Salt House menu. Photo credit Lynne Goldman.
The Salt House menu. Photo credit Lynne Goldman.

Experienced restaurateur Steve Lau (The Raven) opened The Salt House in New Hope last fall as a gastropub similar to the ones you would find in New York City. An upscale but relatively short menu, featuring local products like sustainably raised meats and poultry. The location is the “old Martine’s”, on Main Street, diagonally across from the Logan Inn.

Think fresh oysters, gourmet stackable items, cocktails, wine and beer, pasta dishes, and the classic pub burger (with a twist). What’s more, the building is a 1751 stone structure that gets its name from a time when it was used to store salt, so you’ll see exotic salts played up in everything — even desserts.

The bar is wonderful too — warm, inviting and with a deep selection of spirits and wines. (I can personally vouch for the smooth, balanced and mellow Manhattan.) It is so good to see this bar “alive” again (the previous restaurant did not have a liquor license). Now it is hopping, with great bartenders and interesting cocktails.

The second floor feels more like a cozy living room than a restaurant, with sofas, coffee tables and chairs grouped together, and soft lighting, making it easy to share small plates with a few friends.

We’ve had the pleasure of eating our way through much of the menu. Recommendations: Smoked Haddock Chowder, burgers, grilled artichoke, bacon-wrapped dates and the Four Cheese Mac & Cheese.

A farm to table expansion: Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine

Harvest Seasonal Grill and Wine
Harvest Seasonal Grill and Wine Bison Burger

Restaurateur Dave Magrogan will open his eighth Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar at 2865 South Eagle Road at the Village of Newtown Shopping Center in Newtown, PA in late January / early February.

The restaurant will feature all farm-to-table dishes, which as corporate executive chef Josh Short admits, is a little more challenging in the winter (and the restaurant opened during the coldest time of the year!).

“There are still many great locally grown crops available throughout these colder months,” said Short. “It used to be that root vegetables were the only go-to veggies for chefs during the winter, but with many northeastern farmers over the years having turned to greenhouse farming after the first frost, we now have full availability of vegetables such as salad greens, micro herbs, peppers and even tomatoes during the winter.”

Harvest offers a farm-to-table menu featuring organic, local, sustainable and non-GMO ingredients sourced from more than 75 local farms. The restaurants work with The Farm at Doe Run and Linden Dale Farm for cheeses, while sourcing its grains, including farro, cornmeal and flour, from Bucks County’s own Castle Valley Mill.

Keep an eye on their Facebook page for opening information later this month.

Announcing the rebirth of the Newtown State Store

The Newtown State Store in Bucks County

The Newtown Fine Wine and Good Spirits state store moved to its new, beautiful digs in Newtown borough in early December. It’s the first business to open at Steeple View, a redevelopment project at 212 South State Street.

The new store—the 7th largest in PA and the 20th most profitable—is a whopping 12,952 square feet of retail space, according to Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board spokesman Shawn Kelly.

Why so exciting? Well…if you had ever been in the old Newtown state store, you would understand. It was crowded and had a parking lot that created enough stress to encourage buying a few more bottles (maybe that was the idea?).

The new location follows the Premium Collection store layout that you’ll see in Bucks County’s New Hope and Doylestown stores — wide aisles, clean merchandising and a lot more inventory. The whiskey section alone is impressive. Then there’s 2000+ wines now in stock. Cheers to that!

Guy Fieri featured the Metro Diner in an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and now they’re opening up their third location in Pennsylvania in the Johnsville Plaza at the corner of Street and Jacksonville Roads in Warminster.

The diner features daily blackboard specials and classic favorites like its crab cake Benedict, meatloaf plate, Holy Davoli burger and more, including all-day breakfast. In the scratch kitchen, cooks make their own sauces, soups and compotes. They hand cut their home fries, chips and French fries, and crack fresh eggs daily. From its fried chicken and waffles topped with house-made strawberry butter and signature sweet-and spicy-sauce, to its Charleston shrimp and grits, the large portion sizes enable every guest to enjoy a delicious meal at a great value, with most dishes priced under $15. The Metro Diner is located at 35 West Street Rd.

Clean Roots: Plant-Based Comfort Food

By guest blogger Katie Lutzker,

Serendipitous. That is how Jan Landis, Carol Hoernle, and chef Kristin Moyer all describe the opening and continual operation of their Quakertown restaurant, Clean Roots.

Friends for years, the three opened Clean Roots in May 2017 with resounding success from their community. Clean Roots, a 100% vegetarian restaurant with many vegan options, shows their customers that vegetarian and vegan food can be made without compromising flavor, creativity, or cost.

Jan switched over to a plant-based, vegetarian diet over a year ago. She was tired of not finding wholly vegetarian menus or late-night options, so she thought, “Why don’t we do it?” She asked close friends Kristin and Carol to join her, and within a few months, Clean Roots opened their doors.

Kristin describes the menu and her style of cooking as “plant-based comfort food.” Kristin takes menu items we frequently see, like mac and cheese, shepherd’s pie, and enchiladas and makes them 100% plant-based.

The mac and cheese is made with a vegan cashew cheese; the shepherd’s pie is made with lentils and chickpeas instead of ground beef; and the enchiladas are made with roasted vegetables and black beans instead of meat.

The layers of flavors keep eaters of all diets coming back multiple times a week. The menu is accessible to all—vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters—because it honors the vegetables themselves, showing and educating their customers and their community that nobody needs to prescribe to any one particular diet.

Clean Roots is not trying to force their customers into veganism or vegetarianism. Rather, it is offering a plant-based menu that is new and different from anything else in the surrounding area.

When they first opened, the three were unsure if Quakertown was going to want to try it out. However, the restaurant has gained a large following in their community and they could not be happier to get to know their customers and be a part of Quakertown.

When they opened the restaurant, Jan wanted something both classy and homey, and that is exactly what Clean Roots is. The interior is clean and minimalist with many plants, and the customers are friendly, excited and local.

“It feels like the show Cheers. Everybody knows each other,” says Janis about Quakertown, “people are always hugging and saying hi, and that’s exactly what I wanted.”

Not only have they acquired a following in their local community, but also outside Quakertown. Having so many vegan and plant-based options and a 100% vegetarian menu entices many people to travel to eat at Clean Roots. Customers come from Philadelphia, Allentown, King of Prussia, Collegeville, and Pottstown not only because Clean Roots is located between many major roads, but also because people are willing to travel for the food.

Literally, everything is made in-house including their salad dressings, kimchi, sauerkraut, sauces, and every menu item is made fresh to order. Because of this, they are able to accommodate allergies, dietary restrictions, and substitutions for their customers.

When they can, they either grow their own produce from community gardens (“instead of farm to table, we’re garden to table,” says Jan), buy local or buy organic.

They offer in-house made vegan baked goods and “whips” (a frozen banana “ice cream” treat) for desserts. The specials change almost daily, posted on their Facebook page.

When you talk to Jan, Carol and Kristin, they glow with excitement for what’s to come for Clean Roots. They have big dreams for the restaurant, their gardens and their brand, and their humility keeps them grounded and successful in their community.

“I tell everybody this is happening to us,” says Kristin. “We just showed up and we’re just willing to do the work.”
