Bucks Food Calendar: November 5, 2010

Brrrr. It’s November. But don’t worry. There are still lots of fun things to do and eat in Bucks County before Thanksgiving. Oh. Or are you starving yourself in preparation for Thanksgiving?

Soon-to-be-but-not-yet-food category. The Annual Big Gobbler Contest takes place this Sunday at Davis Feed Mill in Rushland (Wrightstown Township, not far from Buckingham). Watch Bucks County youngsters proudly display their prize turkeys. There will be other fun kids’ activities too. This is Bucks County at its best – sort of a smaller version of the Grange Fair and an annual tradition ’round here.

Speaking of turkeys…check out our post, Fresh turkeys in Bucks – 2010, for where to buy your Thanksgiving bird. Don’t wait too long, however, some suppliers will run out (no pun intended).

39th Annual Peddler’s Village Apple Festival also takes place this weekend in Lahaska. Crisp apple fritters and warm apple pie, savory apple dumplings and freshly pressed apple cider as well as delicious apple specialties all weekend at The Peddler’s Village restaurants and the Town Crier Bakery. You can take home a bushel of green, golden or red delicious apples from local orchards. Watch authentic demonstrations of cider production in an antique cider press and cooking old-fashioned apple butter in a huge cauldron stirred by hand over an open fire. There will also be live musical entertainment, jugglers and stilt walkers on the Main Green. The Apple Pie Eating Contests, held at 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday are held in three age categories — 10 and under, 11-14 and 15 and up. Contestants are chosen by lottery and must sign up from 10 a.m.-2: 45 p.m. at the Hospitality Booth on the Main Green. I’ll be there too, at the Doylestown Food Co-op table, talking to folks about the formation of the co-op. Stop by Saturday morning and say hi.

To market, to market. There is still LOTS of fresh produce to be had at local farmers’ markets all from Bucks County farms, as well as eggs, pastured meats, coffee and teas, baked goods, honey and preserves, cheeses, and gift items. Come to the Stockton Market on Sunday for an amazing Squash Tasting by Brenda Slack from the Milk House Farm Market. Brenda is the Queen of Variety (she loves heirloom seeds). She grows over 2 dozen kinds of squash on her farm (!). She’ll bring it all – and cooked so that you can taste the differences. Don’t miss this event, especially if you are a local chef or home cook. You’ll end up finding some new favorites to add to your repertoire.
