Here we are, in the heat of summer already, and it’s only June 15! The temptation is to stay inside, in the air conditioning, but don’t do it. If you start now, you won’t come out until September. Instead, here’s a bunch of cool ideas for enjoying Bucks County’s food this coming week.
Go Mexican. In addition to over two dozen Mexican and Latino restaurants in Bucks and nearby, you can also enjoy Monday Night Mexican & Blues Night at Fran’s Pub in New Hope and Mexican Night at Taste of the World, the new restaurant in New Hope’s Union Square on Wednesday evenings. In fact, you could easily eat Mexican any day of the week in our county!
Dare you paint and drink? Tuesday night, June 16, the Fireside Smokehouse in Feasterville hosts Paint Party on the Patio. For $35 pp you get all the art supplies you need, plus appetizers. The fun begins at 7 pm. It would be interesting to compare the artwork at the beginning of the evening to the end of the night, after a few adult beverages. Post on Facebook!
Not your typical food truck festival. On Thursday, June 18, Snipes Farm & Education Center will host the Farm to Food Truck FEASTival at their farm in Morrisville. “This is not your typical food truck festival,” says Bart Thompson, the event producer. “We’ve combined locally sourced gourmet food with live music and activities for the whole family.” Jerry Fiess and Matt Romagna, a local folk pop duo, will play outdoors from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. There will also be hayrides around the farm, a bonfire, airbrushing by Crystyles Airbrush Tattoos, and a Beer & Wine Garden. Participating food trucks include Local 215, The Fresh Truck Bistro, The Feed Truck, The Flying Deutschman and Tim’s Barbecue Truck. The full list of trucks including their menus is available at www.snipesfarm.org/feast. Tickets are only $5 online, $10 at the door. Children 7 and under get in free. All proceeds from the Farm to Food Truck FEASTival will go towards Snipes Farm’s Send-A-Kid-To-Camp Campaign. The campaign raises funds to send homeless and other low-income children to summer camp. Click here to purchase tickets. The event begins at 4 pm.
Get the most nutrition and taste from your food. With local farmers markets bursting with beautiful, mouth-watering produce — and refrigerators filling to capacity — one’s mind turns to “how the heck do I store this stuff to keep it fresh??” Susan Pierson has the answers. Join her at the Northampton Library in Richboro on Thursday, June 18 at 7 pm for Eating on the Wild Side: Selecting, Storing and Preparing Food for Taste and Nutrition. Susan, an environmental educator and president of the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, will talk about the best ways to get the freshest, local food and the importance of proper storage and preparation to get the most nutrition. The event is free.
Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Arugula, agretti, asparagus, basil, beets, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, butter oyster mushrooms, carrots, chives, cilantro, dill, escarole, fennel, garlic, garlic scapes, green onions, cut herbs, kale (green + red russian), kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, mint, mizuna, mushrooms, mustard greens, napa cabbage, nasturtium flowers, new potatoes (new!), oregano, parsley, parsnips, potatoes, radicchio, radishes, ramps, rosemary, rhubarb, sage, scallions, snap peas, spinach, spring onions, spring turnips, strawberries, swiss chard, summer squash (new!), radishes, tatsoi, tender greens, thyme, watercress, zucchini (new!) and more.
Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
