Another hot but beautiful week ahead. What’s there to eat in Bucks County?
The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance will host their third Summer Farm Tour this coming Wednesday, August 3rd at Shady Brook Farm in Yardley. These farm tours have become very popular – and delicious. The first one at Tussock Sedge Farm drew over 85 people; the second one at Purely Farm and Just One Seed Farm in Pipersville was attended by over 150 people. Since it’s a potluck, imagine the diversity and summer bounty represented. At Shady Brook, you’ll learn about a multi-generational farm that has evolved with the times and continues to grow. The potluck begins at 6:30 pm; bring your own utensils and plates, as well as a dish that can feed 8-10 people. The farm tour begins at 7:30 pm. Seating will be available. Wear study shoes for the farm tour. For more information, see the Foodshed Alliance’s website.
Zucchinis abound! Tis the season for zucchini, no? And besides zucchini bread, stir fry, eating it raw and stuffed, you can also use zucchinis as racing cars. Yes, really. If you are a reader of Bucks County Taste you know how much I love this annual event that takes place at the Lower Makefield Farmers Market. Last year I was honored to be a judge. I took video and lots of great photos (see our previous post). This coming Thursday, August 4, the Lower Makefield Farmers’ Market will be running a Zucchini Race Car Clinic. Bring the kids – or not – and learn how to make a zucchini race car that can go the distance, or at least look great when it doesn’t!
On the horizon…lots of Farm to Table Dinners. Next weekend, on Saturday, August 6, the Heritage Conservancy will celebrate their 3rd annual farm-to-table fundraising event on a preserved property: Lindsay Farm in Warminster. Chefs Chris Tavares and David Zuckerman of Earl’s Bucks County and Luke Smithson of Jamie Hollander Gourmet will prepare a dinner prepared entirely from food grown and produced locally. Although the event is sold out, you can get in as a volunteer. Contact their Volunteer Coordinator Michele Koch at mkoch@heritageconservancy.org or (215)-345-7020 ext. 140.
Sunday, August 7 brings two reasonably priced farm-to-table dinners. Soup to Nuts Catering will be creating the fresh, farm-sourced food at the Milk House Farm event. The farm tour begins at 5:00 pm and is followed at 6:00 pm by dinner. The five course menu includes inventive dishes that will please both vegetarians and carnivores alike. See the website for more information and the entire menu.
Zone 7 presents the first of their 2011 Dinners on the Farm events to take place at Blooming Glen Farm on August 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. Chefs from Sprig and Vine and Triumph Brewery will create the meal and OWowCow Creamery will provide the dessert, of course. See their website for more information and to purchase tickets at $35 each.
