Bucks Food Calendar: December 24, 2014

Lumberville General Store Supper Club

Today is Christmas Eve… depending on your level of organization, you’re probably either serenely baking cookies or making a mad dash to the stores, trying to figure out what to get that relative who seems to have everything (if you celebrate Christmas, of course). If you’re doing the latter, keep your road rage in check and remember: don’t be a Scrooge! We hope that you all have a fantastic holiday and a chance to relax.

Scrooge

Which leads to our next point. If you just want to sit down with family and friends to a nice holiday meal, many of the restaurants in Hunterdon and Bucks County are kind enough to stay open Christmas Eve (today, Wednesday, December 24) and Christmas (tomorrow, Thursday, December 25). We’ve rounded up a pretty comprehensive list, which you can read here.

Lumberville General Store Supper Club

A hidden gem. We’ve written about the Lumberville General Store Supper Club before, but in case you don’t know, the historical general store adjacent to the Black Bass Hotel in Lumberville, PA is serving some delicious prix fixe meals of its own. The supper club will be undergoing renovations in the New Year, but in the meantime, they’re open this Friday and Saturday evening, December 26 and 27 (here’s this weekend’s menu). There are four seatings each night, at 6 pm, 6:30 pm, 8 pm, and 8:30. Bring your own bottle of wine and enjoy an intimate, expertly prepared meal in a unique setting. [Note: they also have one of the best deals around for New Year’s Eve. See our post here.]

Stockton Market LogoLocal flavor. If you have out-of-town guests, head across the river to Stockton, NJ this weekend and take them to the Stockton Market (open Friday 3-7 pm, Saturday 9 am – 4 pm, and Sunday 10 am -4 pm) . Your companions will love the abundance of local foods and gorgeous handmade goods. It’s also a wonderful place to get lunch on a weekend. After helping myself to far too many cookies, buttery things, creamy things, and well, frankly, a few too many glasses of wine, I head to the market for a fresh pressed green juice called the Energizer from the juice bar, Juice Matters. Or, just keep indulging and head to More Than Q BBQ for their excellent pulled pork. There are still a few days until your New Year’s resolutions kick in, so you may as well live a little. The Drinking Chocolate at Sciascia Confections is another favorite and makes a great gift (try spiking it with Dad’s Hat Rye Whiskey).

Champagne toastNew Year’s Eve. Next Wednesday, December 31, marks the last day of 2014. Make it special by going out to one of the many restaurants offering special menus, complimentary champagne toasts, live music, and the likes. Read our post here to find out who’s open for New Year’s Eve in Bucks and nearby.

To market, to market. The Wrightstown Winter Market takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month through April. The New Hope Indoor Farmers Market happens every Thursday throughout the winter season (except December 25) at the Event Center by Cornerstone (formerly the Eagle Fire Hall) and the Princeton Winter Market occurs once monthly (next date: January 15). In Flemington, the Hunterdon Land Trust’s Winter Farmers’ Market returns Sunday, January 18 from 11 am to 1 pm with 14 farmers and vendors. It takes place at the Dvoor Farm, off the Route 12 circle. The market will be held the third Sunday of every month. The Stockton Farmers Market, the Stangl Factory Farmers Market and the Quakertown Farmers Market are open year round.

Honey crisp apples from Solebury Orchards_Oct 2014Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets:  Apples (Keepsake, Braeburn, Fuji, Gold Rush, Pink Lady, Stayman Winesap), beets, butternut squash, carrots, celeriac (celery root), cheese pumpkins, collard greens, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, micro-greens, mushrooms, napa cabbage, onions, potatoes, rutabaga, salad greens, strawberries (frozen), sweet potatoes, swiss chard, tatsoi, turnips, watermelon radishes, and wheatgrass.

Most markets will also have: eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
