Bucks Food Calendar: August 10, 2015

How would you answer this question?

You know it’s August when…

Here’s Bucks County Taste’s answer.

1. Tomatoes & Corn Dinner. We drove up to Lake Nockamixon yesterday and on the way home I counted at least 10 farm stands on Route 413. Some were regular farm markets, some a flat-bed truck pulled over to the side of the road, and many just what folks had put out from their backyard gardens with an “honor” box to pay.

The Logan Inn is celebrating the bounty of August —particularly tomatoes and corn—this Wednesday, August 12 with a special 4-course dinner. The chefs will be picking the produce themselves, going to the farms the day before the dinner.

Here’s a peek at the menu: Tomato & Watermelon Salad (with heirloom tomatoes from Blooming Glen Farm); Seared Barnegat Light Scallops with creamed sweet corn, green tomato, and pickled local chanterelles; Pan Roasted Free Range Chicken with tomato & corn wheat berry risotto, pico de gallo, and yellow tomato coulis; and for dessert, Sweet Corn Cremé Brulee with honey tomato compote (prepared by Chef Skylar Bird from Cafe Blue Moose!). For more information, click here. To RSVP, call the Logan Inn at 215.862.2300.

2. The 67th Middletown Grange Fair. This is Bucks County’s “county fair,” complete with livestock competitions, 4-H Bunny Clubs (and chickens, and gerbils, and lambs, and cows…), John Deere tractors, pig races, amusement rides and funnel cakes. The food is pretty standard fair food (“Get your fried stuff here!”) but the chicken dinner is GOOD. Grange volunteers cook up delicious chickens on a large grill in the back of the Grange Hall, and serve up half chickens with an ear of local corn, local tomatoes, mashed potatoes, biscuit, and a Goodnoe’s ice cream cup.

Although the fair begins on Wednesday, the Grange Chicken Dinner doesn’t begin until Thursday (through Saturday). Tickets go on sale at 3:30 pm until they sell out – which they do. Admittance to the fair is free but parking is $10 per car. So park, go directly to the ticket office across from the Grange Hall, buy your Chicken Dinner tickets and then start strolling around the grounds. For more information, see the Middletown Grange Fair website.

3. Zucchini Races at the Lower Makefield Farmers Market. Could you make a zucchini into a moving race car? It’s not easy, but each year lots of kids in Lower Makefield give it a try. What’s really fun is seeing all the creative and amazing cars that children and adults alike put together. The decorations are great and the engineering impressive (except most don’t make it to the finish line even with the help of gravity). Entrants must register by 5:00 pm and the races begin at 5:30 pm. See the market’s YouTube channel for the video I took in 2010. Click here for more information about the zucchini races, including the rules and entry form.
