Bucks Food Calendar: September 21, 2012

Delightful sunny fall days! The weather looks beautiful for the weekend and there’s plenty of “harvest” activities going on in Bucks and nearby.

Ever wanted to participate in a grape harvest? Wycombe Vineyards in Forest Grove is asking for help to bring in their grapes this Sunday, September 23. Lunch will be provided. Call 215.598.WINE to RSVP and get more information.

Both Shady Brook Farm in Yardley and Tabora Farm in Chalfont will be celebrating the harvest with Apple Festivals this weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday. Festivities include fun activities for the kids, apple picking, music and more.

In Lower Bucks, catch the Newtown Beerfest on Saturday in Newtown. General admission is $40 and gives you over 80 beers to taste, gates open at 2 pm. There will be local food vendors and music too. See their website for more information. In Yardley, Harvest Day will be taking place on Saturday too followed by Harvest Night, a benefit for the Artists of Yardley Art Center. Lots of good food and beautiful local art.

Trompa, the new wine and tapas bar in Doylestown, is hosting “Tuesday Night Jazz, Shiraz, and Wines with Pizazz” this Tuesday, September 25 at 7 pm. Enjoy jazz in the loft with tapas and wine specials, part of a Tuesday night series through December. See our full food events calendar for more details.

To market, to market. Local farmers’ markets are bursting with the end of summer crops and cooler weather produce. Here’s what you can expect to find: the last of the sweet corn, sweet and hot peppers, tomatoes, green beans, okra, flowers, potatoes, zucchini and eggplant, apples, leeks, broccoli, garlic, onions, cabbages, winter squash, beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuce, chard, brussel sprouts, collards, kale, mizuna, raddichio, radishes, parsley and freshly pressed apple cider. These are the peak months of harvest in Bucks County. It’s the right time to pick up extra to freeze, to can and to ferment for the winter.
