Bucks Food Calendar: September 17, 2014

Little pumpkins

BeersI’m going to level with you. This week’s calendar post took me way longer than normal. Why, you ask? Because this weekend is so jam-packed with things to do, eat and drink that I simply could not choose what to write about. There are 27 events on Saturday alone, including four separate beer festivals. Yes, you heard me right. Four beer fests.

Somehow I doubt that even the most zealous of you want to read a small novel just to find out what’s happening this weekend, and so I narrowed it down to four beer festivals, an Italian feast fit for a Saint, two prix-fixe dinners, and a very special fundraiser.

Good drinking. The Newtown Beerfest is from 12:30 – 5:30 pm on Saturday. The festival will have nearly 100 brewing companies serving samples, including more than ten breweries native to the Bucks County area.

mccoole's fall beer festival_cropMcCoole’s at the Red Lion Inn is hosting the McCoole’s Fall Beer Festival in Quarkertown this Saturday from 5 – 9 pm. Buy a beer ticket to try unlimited samples of over 75 unique beers, or a spirits/wine ticket to dabble in unlimited samples of premium spirits and wine.

Being obsessed with pumpkin-flavored things is just part of the fall experience these days, but we’re not complaining. Iron Hill Brewery in North Wales is hitching a ride on the trend with their Pumpkinfest this Saturday from 1 – 5 pm. They’ll be pouring pints and tulips of Pumpkin Ale, Ichabod Imperial Pumpkin Ale, Pumpkin Weiss, Bourbon Pumpkin Ale, Imperial Pumpkin Ale and Pumpkin Spiced Porter to celebrate the beginning of the fall season.

Good eating. The Feast of San Gennaro Celebration at Villa Milagro in Finesville, just over the river in NJ, sounds like so much fun. Check it out this Saturday and you’ll get the chance to learn some Italian phrases, stomp some grapes, learn how to dance the Tarantella, all the while eating Italian food and drinking wine.

Chef Stephen Yeager has created a delicious menu for this month’s six course Wine Dinner at the Jamison Publick House on Wednesday. Each course comes paired with a particular wine. To start, you’ll be served up meat and potatoes, followed up by seared sea scallops, grilled radicchio salad, Tuscan white bean soup, pheasant breast, and polished off by a lemon tartlet.

Rojo's RoasteryFor the coffee lovers out there, Matt’s Red Rooster Grill is hosting a four course Rojo’s Roastery Tasting Dinner on Wednesday, September 24 featuring a menu highlighting the coffee flavors of Rojo’s Roastery in Lambertville.

Good action. The first “Musclepalooza,” is set for this Saturday at 7 pm in Holicong/Buckingham. This event is a MusclePaloozafundraiser to benefit Muscular Dystrophy research. The evening will have tons of music and food, plus Victory Brewing Company as the official beer sponsor. The opening act will be Jesse Pierce featuring Barry Heimowitz and Mike Lynch. The featured act will be Lisa Beth Weber and John Beacher. Food and drinks will be provided for all guests, free of charge! Go have fun for a good cause. Check out the event’s facebook page for more information.

To market, to market. Here’s what you can expect to find at area farm markets this week. Apples, basil, beets, black-eye peas, cabbage, cantaloupe, chives, cilantro, non-GMO sweet corn, cucumbers (slicing & pickling), dill, eggplant, garlic (fresh and cured), green beans and yellow wax beans, Tuscan and curly kale, lettuce, lettuce microgreens, lettuce mix, mint, mushrooms, okra, Rainbow Swiss Chardtorpedo onions, parsley, peaches, pears, peppers (sweet, frying, poblano, hot), plums, pumpkins, radishes, fingerling potatoes, rosemary, sage, spring onions, winter squash, tomatoes (cherry, heirloom, plum, roma), wheat grass, tomatillos, watermelon, zucchini, and flower bouquets.

Most markets will also have:  eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans. For a list of all farmers’ markets in Bucks and nearby, go to our food guide here.
