If it’s October than it must be Oktoberfest time! Check out Oktoberfest celebrations – emphasis on the beer – at the Washington House in Sellersville Friday evening. At Triumph Brewing Company in New Hope and River Horse Brewery in Lambertville they’ll be offering great seasonal beer and food on Saturday. Or take a drive up to Trauger’s Farm on Saturday or Sunday for their Oktoberfest party in Kintersville. Horse drawn wagon rides, freshly made kettle popcorn, a crafts fair on Sunday and LOTS of pumpkins. Weather should be nice too.
The harvest celebration continues at Tabora Farms in Chalfont this weekend and every weekend in October. There will be pumpkin picking, horse rides, crafts, Halloween scavenger hunt and more fun. Several area wineries are holding festivals in honor of their grape harvests – Crossing Vineyards in Washington Crossing and Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, NJ. Linden Hill Gardens in Ottsville will be holding their annual Ottsville Fall Festival on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Come for hay rides, crafts, all kinds of pumpkins and gourds, and interesting food. And last but not least, it’s Newtown Market Day on Saturday in Newtown. This annual tradition brings over 60 craftspeople and vendors to the streets of Newtown, showcasing colonial crafts, There will also be authentic folk music and dancing, children’s activities, games, hayrides and many local restaurants participating in the Festival of Foods.
To market, to market. Harvest is in full swing at area farmers’ markets too. Most markets are open through October, and several until the weekend before Thanksgiving. Here’s what you can expect to find: the last of sweet corn, sweet and hot peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, edamame beans, tomatoes, green beans, okra, flowers, potatoes, onions, eggplant, along with the hardy crops of fall–crisp apples, leeks, broccoli, garlic, cabbages, winter squash, celery root, beets, turnips, lettuce, chard, collards, kale, mizuna, raddichio, radishes, parsley and freshly pressed apple cider. At most markets you’ll also find free range eggs, pasture-raised meats, honey, gourmet food products, baked goods and crafts.
