Bucks Food Calendar: October 28, 2010 – Boo!

Sorry on the late posting of our food calendar…I’ve been working on my costume!

As I looked over the food events going on in Bucks County this week, something just jumped out and said, “Boo!” Yessiree, this weekend is Halloween. I must admit, though, that ever since I stopped being able to go door-to-door and get free candy, I’ve kind of lost my interest in the holiday. We don’t have children (per se) and the dogs just look so unhappy when we dress them up (“You are so-o-o pathetic,” they seem to say.) And, when you dress up as an adult you have to be clever. Can’t just throw something together. Maybe I’ll call my mom and see if she can help…

Besides stealing hard-earned candy from your children and sipping orange-themed beverages (Pumpkin Ale? Really?), there are lots of fun things going on. Like today…

The last market at the Ottsville Farmers’ Market will include food and festivities! To thank vendors for a great season, they will be celebrating with a pizza oven party after the market. Market patrons are invited to bring a potluck to share with the vendors who provided their weekly products throughout this beautiful season. Special time: 3:00 – 6:30 pm. Come and eat! It will be a beautiful afternoon and end to a great season in Ottsville.

Or tonight, wine and dessert. Pairing Sweet Wine & Dessert at Chaddsford Winery and Tasting Room in Peddlers Village. What could be wrong? Wine, dessert. Yum

Lots of outdoor and indoor farmers’ markets still going…Wrightstown, Doylestown, Plumsteadville, Stockton, Saucon Valley, and the Hunterdon Land Trust in Flemington are still going strong this weekend. Next week, look for the farmers’ market at Playwicki Farm in Feasterville on Wednesday and Thursday’s New Hope Market. I was chatting with Karen May of the Coffee Scoop at the New Hope Market this past Thursday. She was lamenting how business at the market had dropped since Labor Day. Hard to believe! There is so much good food there – not just produce (and lots of it) but also honey, eggs, meat, cheese, (great) coffee and tea, baked goods, take-home food, and gift items (yes, it’s time).

It’s squash time. Come this Wednesday evening to the Wrightstown Village Library (just north of Newtown) for the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s monthly meeting and meet squashes you never knew existed – and what to do with them! Local farmer Brenda Slack (Milk House Farm Market) will be demonstrating and sharing her expertise. See the calendar for details.

It’s apple time, too. Looking forward to next weekend, mark your calendar for the 39th Annual Apple Festival at Peddler’s Village in Lahaska. Lots of yummy apple treats and fun activities for everyone.
