Looks like a great Memorial Day weekend weather-wise, with chance of some thunderstorms here and there – but, hey, it’s summer in Eastern Pennsylvania. C’est la vie.
So what are you cooking up? We’ve got a bison London Broil from Backyard Bison in the fridge, ready to be marinated. [Don’t know where to get your Memorial Day BBQ meat? See our post on local meat stores and producers.]
And then there are the greens we got from our first week at the CSA. Yikes. Lettuce, Swiss rainbow chard, kale, collards, senposai, arugula, vitamin greens, mizuna, and bok choy, radish greens (and gorgeous radishes), and, of course, strawberries. I think there will be some blanching and freezing in my weekend plans.
Mostly we just plan on putting the finishing touches on our little sailboat in the hopes of getting in up to Lake Nockamixon next weekend. That and sitting around with some cheese and cocktails on the balcony. Welcome summer! Come on in!
The Ottsville Farmers’ Market opens for the season this afternoon, from 3 to 7 pm. One of their new vendors is Metropolitan Seafood, who some of you may know from the Stockton Farmers’ Market. Great selection, good fish and nice people. Stop in and say hello. It’s a festive market including local farmers and independent local businesses offering produce, fresh seafood, local meats, baked goods, eggs, fruits, artisanal bread, organic horse feed, alpaca, wool and mohair knit products, jams, jellies, preserves, culinary sauces, prepared food, homemade soaps, raw chips, coffee, chocolate, plants, herbs, music and more. Stop by and say hello. Regular updates may be found throughout the season at www.lindenhillgardens.com.
Saturday will be the opening day of the Plumsteadville Grange Farmers’ Market too which takes place on Saturdays from 9 am – noon, at the Plumsteadville Grange near the intersection of Route 611 and Keller’s Church Road until October 30th.
Not as many pancake breakfasts going on this weekend, but we would like to check out two annual ones in Doylestown on Memorial Day – one at the Masonic Lodge and the other at Salem United Church of Christ (who will also be doing their annual Strawberry Festival June 5th). Too many pancakes? I don’t think so.
Tonight is the first night of fireworks in New Hope-Lambertville. This new and explosive event will be taking place every Friday night all summer. Get your seat at some nice outdoor patio and enjoy!
