Bucks Food Calendar: May 11, 2012

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you wonderful mothers out there! It should be a nice weekend weather-wise to enjoy with family and friends.

Wine aficionados will enjoy some special events at area wineries like “Wine Tasting for Moms” at Crossing Vineyards on Saturday. The Mother’s Day Wine Trail will take place at Old York Cellars in Ringoes, NJ all weekend and nearby Unionville Vineyards will be celebrating with their Spring Wine Festival.

Many, many restaurants are offering Mother’s Day brunches, like the Pineville Tavern, which is using the day to kick-off Sunday brunches every week from now on. If you want something a little different, the Hartsville Fire Company is putting on their annual Mother’s Day Buffet Breakfast and the Haycock Fire Company will be doing a Mother’s Day Roast Beef & Ham Buffet. That’s in addition to two other firehouse breakfasts in Richland Township and Upper Black Eddy.

Brad’s Raw Food, the makers of those healthy and yummy Brad’s Raw Chips, is planning a BIG party for this weekend to open The Chip Factory in Pipersville. If you haven’t heard of this local success story – I remember three years ago when Brad Gruno was selling his chips at the Ottsville Farmers’ Market and now he’s selling in hundreds of stores nationwide – then now’s the time. The Chip Factory will be a community gathering place for healthy, nutritional information and products,  including fresh green juices, raw green smoothies, superfoods, classes, workshops, and holistic and supportive lifestyle coaching. Lots of activities are scheduled for this weekend. See their website or Facebook page for more information.

To market, to market. What can you expect to find at area farmers’ markets? Arugula, asparagus, bok choy, spinach, kale, chard, dandelion greens, radishes, rhubarb, locally foraged ramps and mushrooms, leeks, spring onions, garlic, garlic scapes, lettuce, potatoes, and a variety of herbs and even strawberries. Most markets will also have freshly baked goods, eggs, pasture-raised meats and free range poultry, honey, jams and more. Some markets may be selling plants – herb, vegetable and flower – for planting in your backyard. The Ottsville Farmers’ Market takes place Fridays from 4 pm to 8 pm, the Doylestown Farmers’ Market is every Saturday morning 7 am to 12 pm and the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market opens for the season this Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm. The Stockton Market is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See their websites for more information (click above).
