Can I say it? Thank goodness it’s Friday. Don’t know what happened to this week, and cannot believe that next week is July 4th, but hey…the weekend is here. Here’s to all the farmers out there who have been working hard cutting hay in the hot sun these past weeks and growing lovely vegetables and fruits for us. And here’s to all the seasonal labor, too, out there hired to pick that wonderful food for us and often “invisible” in our communities. Thank you.
What’s up this weekend? Yes, there are a couple of firehouse breakfasts as usual. I think we’ll be checking out the Haycock Fire Co.’s breakfast on Sunday morning. Been meaning to for some time.
But I wish I could clone myself. One of me would be working around the house on Saturday, getting ready for company on Sunday…and the other would be at the East Coast Food & Wine Festival. This year’s festival – full of great food, vendors, chefs, wine and music – is taking place at Hopewell Valley Vineyards just over the river in Pennington, Saturday and Sunday from 12 – 5 pm. Check out their website for more info.
At the market. Let’s welcome the Indian Valley Farmers’ Market, the last but not least of the Bucks County farmers’ market to open this season, in the Marketplace at Telford Station, Main Street and Penn Avenue, Telford. The market takes place every Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm until October 16th. The market opens with a Berried Treasure Contest. Dig through your berry recipes and bring your best cake, pie or even salsa. It be berry, berry good.
Also a big welcome back to the Perkasie Farmers’ Market which reopened on Saturday, June 12th (sorry I missed that). That takes place in Olde Town Perkasie, near 7th and Market Sts. on the 2nd and 4th Saturday morning through the summer.
What can you expect to find at local markets, produce-wise? Well, probably no more radishes (wa-a-hh!). Too hot. But look for: Arugula, local blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, eggplant, kale and other greens, kohlrabi, peas (maybe), radishes (maybe), raspberries, red beets, scallions, spring mix and head lettuces, summer squash, sweet Asian turnips, sweet green peppers, zucchini, and possibly even corn-on-the-cob!
