Bucks Food Calendar: July 26, 2013

Fairview Farm peachesSummer is here. Sure, we’ve had some hot weather and the sweet corn is coming in, but nothing says summer more to me than peaches at Fairview Farm and tomatoes at Fred Slack’s farm. We have arrived.

To get to some of the best peaches in Bucks County, go to the intersection of Route 413, Pineville Road and Township Line Road, right by the Pineville Tavern. You’ll see a sign – the one I wait for this time of year – that says “PEACHES.” Go down Pineville Road, past the Pineville Tavern about a half mile. On the right is Fairview Farm. Tell Sharon that Bucks County Taste sent you. Also, see our previous post, A Circus in Your Mouth, for a list of more farms in Bucks where you can get peaches and a great recipe for Blueberry-Peach Cobbler.

Tomato sign on Slack barn; photo by L. GoldmanThe other sign I look for this time of year is the one across the street from Fred Slack’s farm in Forest Grove. “TOMATOES’ in handwritten block letters announces that Fred Slack’s delicious tomatoes are now available. Several years ago I wrote a story, The Tomato Triangle, about Fred, the Pineville Tavern and Chuck Rekemeier, who grows tomato seedlings for Fred just a half mile down the road from the Pineville Tavern, in a greenhouse on Fairview Farm. If you’ve ever been to the Pineville Tavern in the summer, you may have seen – or enjoyed – a dish they have been serving for over 20 years called “Freddie’s Tomatoes.” Guess where the tomatoes come from?

Melons from Blooming Glen Farm. photo by L. GoldmanTo market, to market. New arrivals this week! Cantaloupe, shallots, green peppers, tomatillos and okra. Also look for basil, beets, blackberries, blueberries, cabbage, carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, dandelion greens, eggplant, fennel, garlic (fresh), heirloom tomatoes, lettuce and lettuce mixes, onions (fresh), parsley, peaches, potatoes (new), radishes, rosemary, scallions, string beans, summer squash, sunflowers, Swiss chard, thyme, turnips, and zucchini.

You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.

On the radar…
