In a few more days, we’ll reach the Winter Solstice (December 21), after which, the days will be getting longer, not shorter! That’s cause for celebration, unless you hate sunlight. There are plenty of festivities this week, which spans the length of Hanukkah and precedes Christmas Eve and Christmas. Head to one of the many community celebrations, and take your pick of firehouse breakfasts this Sunday. Happy holidays!
Hanukkah. At 6 pm every night this week until December 23, the New Hope Free Press is sponsoring a Community Menorah Lighting on the Delaware at the foot of the free bridge between New Hope and Lambertville (right in the center of town).
Tonight, Wednesday, December 17, the Hanukkah Songfest Celebration will take place starting at 7 pm at the corner of State and Hamilton Streets in Doylestown. The event will be hosted by Rabbi Mitchell Delcau of Temple Judea of Bucks County and the Live at Judea Band. Sing along, grab a “goodie bag” of dreidel and gelt, and watch the lighting of a handmade menorah.
Kehilat Hanahar is having a Hanukkah Celebration tonight, Wednesday, December 17, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Everyone is invited to bring their Hanukkah menorah and candles. There will be special learning and fun activities for adults and children, followed by the group lighting of all of the menorahs at once, which creates a spectacular glow in the room. The celebration will continue with the singing of Chanukah songs, with live music from Deva Troy and other congregants. There will also be latkes and sufganiot (doughnuts)! The event is open to the community.
Friday night, December 19, head to Central Bucks Ambulance at 6:30 pm for a Shabbat Latke Dinner to enjoy traditional treats like kiddush, challah and latkes. It’s free, too! Donations are, of course, always appreciated.
Guy’s Night Out. This one’s new. Ladies Nights are a dime a dozen, but Shaving Grace of Doylestown is mixing it up with a Doylestown Men’s Shopping Night. About 15 of the stores from around Doylestown will be set up with gifts to sell, which men can peruse while enjoying free food and beer. Good idea; spread the word!
Breakfast. Breakfast lovers, rejoice. It’s that weekend of the month again, where a whole bunch of community breakfasts occur simultaneously on Sunday, December 21. Depending on your location, you may be within a mile radius in any direction from pancakes, hot off the griddle. At the Perkasie Fire Company, enjoy an All-you-can-eat Breakfast with Santa from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Riegelsville Fire Company is serving up breakfast from 8 am to 12:30. Silverdale Fire Company’s Breakfast begins at 8 am and runs until 1 pm.
In case you forgot…. Next Wednesday and Thursday, December 24th and 25th, are Christmas Eve and Christmas! There aren’t many events planned on those days but there are plenty of options for dining out on both days. Check out our post: 2014 – Going out for Christmas.
To market, to market. Getting your hands on local produce is still possible during the winter. The Wrightstown Winter Market happens on the second and fourth Saturday of every month through April. The Indoor Farmers Market happens every Thursday throughout the winter season at the Event Center by Cornerstone (formerly the Eagle Fire Hall) and the Princeton Winter Market happens once monthly, starting this Thursday, December 18. The Stockton Farmers Market, the Stangl Factory Farmers Market and the Quakertown Farmers Market are open year round.
Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Apples (Keepsake, Braeburn, Fuji, Gold Rush, Pink Lady, Stayman Winesap), beets, butternut squash, carrots, celeriac, celery root, cheese pumpkins, collard greens, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, micro-greens, mushrooms, napa cabbage, onions, potatoes, rutabaga, salad greens, strawberries (frozen), sweet potatoes, swiss chard, tatsoi, turnips, watermelon radishes, wheatgrass.
Most markets will also have: eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
