One of the things I miss this time of year are the sweets. I work from home, and don’t get me wrong, I know there are lots of benefits to that. But I remember when I worked in an office come the holidays there was always fun stuff to eat in the office kitchen. Maybe not good for the waistline but fun nonetheless.
Cookies. There are two cookie sales happening this week. The first is on Saturday at St. Anne’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Warrington. Every year they host a Cookie Walk as well as selling their traditional nut rolls. In Riegelsville on Sunday come out for a Very Merry Cookie Sale & Posh Presents at the Riegelsville Borough Hall. In addition to Christmas cookies, there will be small cakes, candy, and savories available at the event, as well as lots of fun gift items, artisanal food products and more. All proceeds benefit the Riegelsville Public Library. See their website for more details.
Santa’s in town. There are two firehouse breakfasts this Sunday and guess who the guest of honor will be? At the Perkasie Fire Co. and at the Riegelsville Fire Co. they’ll be serving up a hearty breakfast and Santa will be on hand for all you “nice” folks (not the “naughty” ones).
Foodie gifts. Don’t know what to give the foodie in your life? (or hint that you’d like it yourself?). We’ve published two articles on Bucks County Taste on unique food gifts (with one more post coming). Local foodie gifts: Olive Oil explains what is so special about good – really good – olive oil and balsamic vinegars, along with a list of all the stores selling them locally. All the stores have nice gift baskets or you can put one together yourself. Also great as a hostess gift instead of the ubiquitous bottle of wine. Food and wine tours, classes and personal chef services are just some of the gift ideas in our post Local foodie gifts: Part one.
To market, to market. Yep, there is still lots of local produce, as well as locally raised meats, eggs and other foods available. The Stockton Market is open year round. You’ll find Milk House Farm Market there with their winter produce. You can also buy product from Milk House at their farm in Upper Makefield (Newtown), 7 days a week. The Hunterdon Land Trust Dvoor Market will be holding a “winter” market this Sunday as well. What might you find? Apples, onions, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, daikon, radishes, turnips, rutabagas, beets, lettuce, bok choy, kale, collards, chard, spinach, tatsoi, mustard greens, cauliflower, broccoli, broccoli raab, cabbage, winter squashes, cranberries, wheat berries, Asian pears, fennel, mushrooms, dried beans, salad mix, horseradish, Brussels sprouts, radicchio, arugula, escarole, parsnips, and pea shoots.
