It’s hard to believe that it’s the end of August (especially with this beautiful weather we’ve been having!). I’m feeling kind of lazy, just want to sit outside sipping something cool and enjoying the breeze. Very hard to believe that Labor Day is next weekend, with back-to-school right around the corner. ‘Course I’m not going back to school and I don’t have any children, but seasonal memories go deep. The change is coming. Peaches will come to an end, tomatoes and corn for a bit longer. But look for fall harvests of squashes, grapes and greens.
The calendar is a little “quiet” too. Many of the area wineries will have music to go along with your glass this weekend – Crossing Vineyards, Hopewell Valley Vineyards, and the Wine Concert Series at Shady Brook and The Market at Del Val. See the calendar for details. The Washington House in Sellersville also hosts its Friday Freestyle Flights of Wine where for $10 you can create your own tasting flight by choosing four different wines from a list of twenty.
Looking ahead to Labor Day weekend, there’s the Pocono Garlic Festival on September 1st and 2nd. Two days of all things garlic, more than you can ever, ever imagine with chefs, restaurants, music, crafters and – did I mention? – a lot of garlic inspired treats, as well as locally grown garlic. By the way this is a great time to stock up on local garlic. It keeps well and is so much better than the stuff from China and South America in the supermarkets.
To market, to market. Speaking of local produce, what can you expect to find at area farmers’ markets this week? Certainly garlic but look for local melons now too. Our guest blogger Rich Baringer wrote a great post along with recipes and how to pick out a good melon. You’ll also find sweet corn, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, nectarines, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, heirloom, cherry, plum and slicing tomatoes, basil, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, red, white and blue potatoes, various basils, striped, purple and Italian eggplant, broccoli, garlic, spring onions, scallions, cucumbers, cabbages, patty pan squash, zucchini, yellow squash, red and striped beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuces, Swiss and ruby chard, brussel sprouts, collards, kale, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro. You’ll also find free range eggs, meat raised on pasture, baked goods, interesting jams, honey and more. Check here for your closest farmers’ market.
