Lots of fun stuff going on this week in Bucks County. Where shall we start?
There’s the Middletown Grange Fair, of course, which began on Wednesday and goes through Sunday in Wrightstown. Looks like the weather will be nice this weekend too. Make sure you get the famous chicken dinner. It’s good.
The Riegelsville Fire Company will be holding their monthly breakfast on Sunday. Great excuse for a nice drive and you’ll get a really good breakfast. Proceeds benefit the fire house. See our previous post about this firehouse breakfast.
If you’re out for a drive, why not put Forest Grove on the itinerary? Forest Grove is a small village in Buckingham only a few miles from the intersection of Route 263 and Route 313/Swamp Road. There you can stop by Fred and Evelyn Slack’s farm and buy the famous (via the Pineville Tavern) Freddie’s Tomatoes, some of the best tomatoes you’ll have this year, or ever. Corn is very good too. You’ll find the farm at 362 Forest Grove Road. Then continue on Forest Grove Road until you come to the Wycombe Vineyards and stop in for a glass or two. Learn more about this local gem in our post, The fifteen dollar staycation.
Ever wondered how to preserve some of this great harvest we’re getting this year? Come to Food Preservation 101, a workshop on canning and preserving, hosted by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance and Newtown Township Parks and Recreation. Mandel Smith, Master Food Preserver with the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension, will cover pressure canning and hot-water-bath canning, freezing, and jam and jelly making. The program takes place on Wednesday, August 22, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The program fee is $8 per person. Pre-registration with Newtown Township is required: 215.968.2800, x239, class #123232.
To market, to market. What can you expect to find at farmers’ markets this week? Sweet corn, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, pears, nectarines, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes: heirloom, cherry, plum and slicing, basil, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, red, white and blue potatoes, various basils, striped, purple and Italian eggplant, broccoli, garlic, spring onions, scallions, cucumbers, cabbages, patty pan squash, zucchini, yellow squash, red and striped beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuces, Swiss and ruby chard, brussel sprouts, collards, kale, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro. You’ll also find free range eggs, meat raised on pasture, baked goods, interesting jams, honey and more. Check here for your closest farmers’ market.
