Bucks Food Calendar: August 13, 2014

Grange Fair Dining Hall

Bunny at the Grange FairThe big news this week is, of course, the 66th Annual Middletown Grange Fair. This is Bucks County’s version of a county fair, the kind you hear about happening in Iowa and Kansas and places like that. If you think Bucks County is all suburbia, visit the Grange Fair and see all the 4-H kids who have proudly raised their goats, pigs, chickens and bunny rabbits. Walk through the exhibition halls where local folks have entered their vegetables, baked goods, quilts and so much more, with the hopes of getting a blue ribbon. There’s rides for the kids, vendors selling everything from hardware to home improvement, music, John Deere tractors (new and antique), and some very interesting entertainment including Sue Wee Pig Racing, a Goat Obstacle Course, Mutts Gone Nuts and Cow Chip Poker (don’t ask me; I have no idea).

Grange Fair Chicken BBQ DinnerThe food tends to be typical fair fare—fat, sugar and salt being the key ingredients. The main food event in my opinion is the chicken barbecue dinner, cooked and served by volunteers. It takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3:30 pm until they sell out. The meal includes locally raised chicken, local corn on the cob and tomatoes, buttered parsley potatoes, cranberry sauce, roll and butter, a drink and even a cup of Goodnoe ice cream. Tickets are only $15 and go on sale at 2:30 pm. After getting your food, sit down at the communal tables and meet your Bucks County neighbors. The fair opens today, Wednesday, August 13, and continues through Sunday, August 17. The cost to enter is $10 per car per day, or you can get a 5-day pass for $30. It takes place at the Middletown Grange, on Penns Park Road in Wrightstown (off of Route 413, just north of Newtown). For more information, see their website and our post, Food at the Middletown Grange Fair.

Upper Bucks BrewfestHere’s a few more highlights of this coming week. On Saturday, head to Quakertown for the Upper Bucks Brewfest taking place at the Quakertown Train Station from 1 – 5 pm. This event, which began last year, raises funds to support revitalization efforts in downtown Quakertown. There will be 50-70 different samplings of beer and wine, as well as food and music. See their website for more info. Also on Saturday, the Flint Hill Farm & Education Center in Coopersburg hosts a Healthy Eating Party including tasty organic food, good music, and tours of the farm. It’s a great farm and a lot of fun for the family. A donation of only $10 per person or $10 per couple is requested, less if you bring a side dish. This Tuesday through Thursday, Hamilton’s Grill Room in Lambertville presents their last Jersey Shore Dinner of the summer. The menu looks lovely: a fresh Jersey tomato salad, drizzled with olive oil and sea salt then sprinkled with basil leaves; steamed Mussels and Littleneck Clams; steamed Maine Lobster, grilled chicken thighs and sweet sausage paired with Jim Hamilton’s summer cole slaw; red bliss potato salad and fresh picked Jersey corn on the cob, and peach shortcake. All this for only $29.95 per person. See their website for more information and to make reservations. To market, to market. Here’s what you can expect to find at local farmers markets this week. Eggplants from Blooming Glen Farm. Photo credit L. Goldman Just arrived! Pears. You’ll also find basil, beets, cabbage, cantaloupe, cherry tomatoes, chives, cilantro, non-GMO sweet corn, cucumbers (slicing & picking), dill, eggplant, fennel, green beans, garlic (fresh and cured), Tuscan and curly kale, lettuce, lettuce microgreens, mix, mint, mushrooms, nectarines, okra, torpedo onions, parsley, peaches, peppers (sweet and hot), radishes, red new potatoes, rosemary, sage, spring onions, summer squash, Swiss chard, tomatoes (heirloom), wheat grass, tomatillos, watermelon, zucchini, and flower bouquets.  Most markets will also have:  eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans. For a list of all farmers’ markets in Bucks and nearby, go to our food guide here.
