Bucks Food Calendar: March 30, 2012

Here chick, chick, chick. Did you know you can “rent” a couple of small chicks for Easter here in Bucks County? Ya gotta love it. The Happy Farm up in Kintersville does this every year. Here’s how it works: come to the farm at 1911 Gallows Hill Road on April 6th, 7th or 9th from 2 pm to 6 pm. Pick up two chicks with box, bedding, feed and instructions for $40 (cash or check). You provide a small lamp to warm one corner of the box, two shallow dishes, simple care, and supervision of pets and small children. Return two weeks later, same days of the weekend and times. No reservation is needed, just come to the farm one of those days. Wear shoes that can get dirty and meet all the animals. As farmers Jean and Tom say, “All the fun of buying and having Easter chicks, but you get to return them when they turn into messy teenagers and they will get to grow up into Happy Hens on the Farm.”

Matzoh making workshops. Bobolink Dairy and Bakehouse is offering once again classes on making matzoh for Passover. You might remember my post from last year (including video). It was so cool. Using ancient Emmer flour, the biblical ancestor of wheat, you’ll mix, roll and bake the dough, getting the job done in under the traditional 18 minutes. With the intense heat stored in the hearth, they crisp up and get golden in seconds, little round matzot, which come out looking like they were baked on a hot rock in the Sinai! This is very much a hands-on event, and even small children are welcome (children over 2 years old; each child under 7 years old must have an adult to supervise them). It’s a lot of fun and a great activity to do together as a family. The classes take place on Sunday April 1st and Wednesday April 4th. Click here to register. The cost is $12 per person, and you get to keep the matzoh that you make.

Easter brunch/dinner. If you are still looking for somewhere to take the family out for Easter, check out our post from last year for a list of area restaurants that usually put on a good spread.
