Locals night at Karla’s

I’ve been meaning to do it for awhile and finally did last night – Locals Night at Karla’s in New Hope. It was a chilly, damp evening and Karla’s was cozy as always, especially with Barry Peterson playing soft guitar in the background.

Every Monday night for over twenty years Karla’s has been offering a 3-course meal for the cost of the entree, all in the $12 – $19 range. It’s a special menu written up by hand and copied, so you know it’s “fresh.” I had the Tilapia Francese for $16, including a rice pilaf with carrots. The meal included a soup or salad and a choice of many yummy desserts. My dining partner ordered the Mahi with a wasabi orange glaze. We both thought about the $12 pasta – baked penne in a tomato cream sauce with spinach and provolone. We shared our desserts – chocolate mousse ganache and key lime pie. The menu included something for everyone – fried chicken with mac & cheese, a flatiron steak and many of Karla’s standards like fried calamari. All in all a great deal and a good meal.

I even had a good parking experience, rare for New Hope. I parked the car but had no quarters. So I ran down Mechanic Street to Karla’s to meet my friend, who did have quarters. In the time it took me to get there and back to the car, there was a $20 parking ticket on my windshield! Walking back I saw the parking attendant. Be cool, I said to myself, be cool. I approached him, told him I was frustrated and what had happened. And he took the ticket back! Bravo New Hope! Now, if they could just offer free parking on slow Monday nights.
