Bucks Food Calendar: September 14, 2012

With the cooler weather comes the return of firehouse breakfasts. This Sunday there are four of them – in Riegelsville, Ivyland, Perkasie and Silverdale. Get in the car, go for a drive and enjoy one of Bucks County’s most beautiful seasons.

What better time for a pig roast than on a crisp fall day? The Lumberville General Store, just across from the Black Bass Hotel, will be hosting one on Saturday September 15 from 11 am to 9 pm. It will be all-you-can-eat. You can comfortably stuff your face while watching the Thompson Bucks County Classic International Cycling Event whiz by that morning on Route 32. For more information, click here. The General Store also has a supper club on Friday and Saturday nights, a three-course gourmet meal for $18.95 per person.

Up county – in addition to the firehouse breakfasts – there is the Fall Annual Beerfest at McCoole’s in Quakertown on Saturday. The first session takes place from noon to 4 pm, the second session from 5 pm to 9 pm. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Get more details at their website. In Perkasie, stop by one of our favorite “local” hang-outs – the Down to Earth Café. Fresh, innovative, locally sourced food. Friday night they’ll have music and dinner too.

To market, to market. Farm markets are still in full swing, brimming with local produce and food. What can you expect to find this week? Sweet and hot peppers, sweet corn, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, potatoes, basil, eggplant, broccoli, garlic, onions, scallions, cabbages, zucchini, summer and winter squash, beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuce, chard, Brussel sprouts, collards, kale, mustard greens, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro and other herbs. In addition, many markets will have free range eggs, pastured meats, cheeses, baked good, specialty food items like jams, preserves and such.
