Bucks Food Calendar: November 2, 2015

Winter Squash Tasting

Wow. Can’t believe it’s November. I guess everyone is saying that but here it is. Daylight ends sooner, we’re definitely past “peak” of the leaves and people are actually talking about the holidays. But Bucks County is still beautiful and full of interesting local food, whether it be at restaurants, taverns, farmers markets, wineries and breweries, churches or our downtown streets. Enjoy!

Winter Squash Tasting; Bucks County Foodshed Alliance

Go beyond butternut! Sure you’ve cooked butternut squash. Maybe even a spaghetti squash. But there is so much more. Join Farmer Brenda Slack of Milk House Farm Market at the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology in Jamison, from 7 – 8:30 pm on Wednesday, November 4. Brenda will introduce you to at least a dozen different local squashes and pumpkins that she grows on her farm in Upper Makefield. The culinary arts students at MBIT are preparing the squashes for all to sample, along with handouts and recipes for you to take home. The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance (BCFA) is sponsoring the event. Admission is free. Find more information here.

Spinnerstown Hotel beer tasting

Enjoy five beers and five paired courses from the mind of Chef Ricky Heinrichs. Come to the Spinnerstown Hotel and Taproom for a Weyerbacher Beer Dinner, with courses of pear arugula salad, toasted pistachio gorgonzola vinaigrette and Merry Monks beer, cocoa chili powder braised elk, honey smoked tomato bean chili ravioli with a 16th Anniversary beer, duck confit macaroni and cheese cake, vanilla apple cider poached egg, fried plantain, grilled bok choy with a D-Tango Unchained beer, and a dessert with a Tiny beer. The dinner is on Wednesday, November 4 from 7 – 9 pm. See ticket prices and buy them here.

Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Apples, apple cider, beets, broccoli rabe, cabbage, carrots, collards, lettuce, garlic, green beans, kale, mushrooms, variety of onions, oregano, sweet peppers, chili peppers, red and white potatoes, radishes, rosemary, rutabaga, sage, salad mix, Swiss chard, winter squash and spaghetti squash, thyme, and more. [Availability will vary by market.]

Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
