Torta gianduia (chocolate & hazelnut cake)

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” – the Serenity Prayer.

Anybody else need that reminder with the relentless last hurrah of winter Mother Nature is throwing our way? It stinks, for sure. But be wise: there’s nothing you can do about the weather, so you’d be better off digging into a delicious meal and pouring yourself a healthy glass of wine… kicking piles of snow will not hurt the snow’s feelings, and will not make it go away. So, eat up, drink up, and deal with it (more on that below) … we’re almost to Spring! The Basic Art of Italian Cooking with Maria Liberati

Italian Cooking Classes. You’ve got two chances to learn how to cook like a real Italian this week. On Thursday, March 5, Celebrity Chef and award-winning author Maria Liberati will be at The Market at Del Val at 6 pm for The Basic Art of Italian Cooking: Da Vinci Style, discussing cuisine from the various regions Leonardo Da Vinci lived in. She’ll also be giving a cooking demonstration and handing out samples of five of the dishes.

Torta gianduia (chocolate & hazelnut cake)Also on Thursday, March 5, Casa Casale in Peddler’s Village will host a Piedmont Cooking Class, featuring the foods of the mountainous region in Northern Italy. The menu includes Bagna Cauda (raw vegetable with a heated garlic and anchovies sauce), Crocchette (rice or potato croquettes with cheese), Agnolotti Piemontesi with Sage Butter Gran,  Bollito Misto Piemontese (Boiled different cuts of veal, beef, chicken, sausage & vegetables) and Torta Gianduia (decadent Hazelnut and Chocolate torte).

Pierogies; iStockUkranian Food. St. Anne Ukranian Church in Warrington will be serving their annual Ukranian Dinner this Saturday, March 7, between 4 pm and 7 pm. Pierogies, Holupschi, Kielbasa and Kraut, Rye Bread, and Halushki are all on the menu, and you’re invited to BYOB.

Wine. Remember in the first paragraph when I advised you to accept your wintery fate and drink wine? In addition to the usual weekly tastings and tours, two local vineyards are releasing new vintages. Unionville Vineyards is celebrating their Red Rhone Release with specials this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, including $5 flights of their varieties of Rhone style wines or extended tastings of any eight wines for only $10.

Old York Cellars is celebrating their own wine release of their 2013 Merlot, with discounted prices all weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, including $1 off wine tastings and 10% off all bottles of wine.

Other chances to enjoy some vino this Saturday, March 7,  include:

On Sunday, March 8, Sand Castle Winery’s Winemaker’s Dinner is at 1 pm and Crossing Vineyards is hosting a Wine and Cheese Pairing class at 2 pm.

Cheers, and enjoy your weekend!
