13 things you gotta do in Bucks this weekend (October 14 – 16)

The best part about living in Bucks County (or Pennsylvania in general) is seeing the season change right before your eyes. Pumpkins appear in the patches, farmers markets are still bursting with fresh produce, and you can’t drive anywhere without seeing those colorful fall trees.

Another great part about Bucks County in the fall is all the activities and food festivals. This weekend, check out the 13 things we’ve gathered for you, like pumpkin picking, porter tasting, an indoor farmers market, and a feast fit for October.

1. Cocktails in the Castle

Cocktails in the Castle

The Mercer Museum in Doylestown is hosting its annual fall gala, featuring an evening of dining, drinking, and hanging out with friends in a historic building of the American archaeologist and tile maker, Henry Chapman Mercer. Guests will sample the area’s best restaurants, desserts, and listen to lively music. Guests can also support the 2016 Mission Appeal with a silent auction, which benefits the Log House Education Program.

2. Fall Craft Fair

Saturday, October 15, 9 am – 3 pm, Lenape Valley Church, 321 W. Butler Avenue, New Britain, PA

Head over to the 22nd Annual Craft Fair at the Lenape Valley Church in New Britain to see the 50+ crafters selling their handmade items. While you shop around, surveying the artisans’ work, munch on some chili, hot dogs, and fresh-baked goods. The event benefits Food for the Poor and Samaritan’s Purse. Those interested in a booth should call 215.345.1099. Space at this event costs $30 for an eight foot table (provided). Admission is free.

3. Indoor Yardley Farmers Market

The indoor Yardley Farmers Market has returned for the season, so you can still get all your favorite produce goods without having to worry about being in the cold. The indoor market is held twice a month, on the first and third Saturdays from October through April 15, 2017 on the Yardley Friends Meetinghouse. The variety of vendors include pasture raised meats, seasonal vegetables and fruits, pickled and fermented foods, prepared and ready-to-eat-foods, roasted coffee, honey, and more. The market is open from 9 – 11 am this Saturday, October 15.

4. Autumn Alive!

Saturday, October 15, 10 am – 4 pm, Downtown Quakertown, PA

The Quakertown Alive! events committee has been busy planning the 16th annual Autumn Alive! festival in downtown Quakertown, PA. From 10 am – 4 pm this Saturday, October 15, Broad Street, on 4th Street to Hellertown Avenue will be filled with vendors, food booths, entertainment and kids activities.

There’s music on two stages, a beer garden for all you guests over 21, a pet parade, and more! The 2016 food vendor list includes: Cloud Nine Organics, Aunt Nancy’s Peanut Brittle, Amy’s Creative Cakes, Nichole’s Custom Cakes, Clucky Kettlecorn, Big Poppa’s, Stuffed to the Grills, and more.

5. Fall Fun Days

Saturday, October 15, 11 am – 4 pm, The Market at DelVal, Lower State Road, Doylestown, PA

Delaware Valley University is known for its scenic campus, but it’s also known for being home to The Market at DelVal (located right behind the school’s New Britain parking). The Market is full of the fall spirit, especially during the weekend. Fall Fun days include a day down on the farm, with wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, pumpkin picking, inflatable attractions, a giant corn maze, and lots of other family fall fun. Plus, you’re definitely going to get hungry with all the activities, so you might as well stop into the Market for some fresh made sandwiches, salads, and Uncle Dave’s pumpkin ice cream.

6. Pumpkin Festival

Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 10 am – 4 pm, None Such Farm, 4458 York Rd., Buckingham, PA

None Such Farm is finally filled with pumpkins, so head into Buckingham and pick your own this Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. Take a hay ride, drink apple cider, and enjoy a lunch of homemade chili, pulled pork, hamburgers and hot dogs. Don’t forget to pick your perfect carving pumpkin while you are there! After the pumpkins, check out the other seasonal produce that the farm is harvesting, like bedding plants, vegetable plants, herbs, field flowers, as well as the fresh None Such Farm pasture-raised black Angus beef available in the market. The pumpkin festival is open from 10 am – 4 pm, with no admission fee.

7. Open House at Flint Hill Farm

Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 10 am – 4 pm, Flint Hill Farm, 1922 Flint Hill Road, Coopersburg, PA

Flint Hill Farm is both a working farm—with goats, cows, chickens, ducks and horses—and an educational center for children (and adults). Twice a year, the farm has an open house. Come pick pumpkins, take a horse-drawn hayride, see a demonstration by farrier Pet Sanchez in the blacksmith shop, meet Alfie the potbellied pig, pet some ducks and lots more. There will be a hay slide and Corn Box for the kids, and plenty to eat.

Executive Chef Michael Brack of Lehigh Valley Health Network will be preparing Fall Harvest Specials in the Food Court from 1 pm – 3 pm on both days. Or munch on hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn, and other yummy treats at the food stand. The Farm Store will be open for purchase of smoothies, cow and goat cheeses, raw milk, and more. 8. OctoberFEAST

Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, 11 am – 5 pm, Peddler’s Village, Routes 202 & 263, Lahaska, PA

Raise a glass and toast to this year’s OctoberFEAST at Peddler’s Village. This weekend it’s all about German food and drinks. Here are your options:

  • The Beer Garden Tent feature Free Will Brewing, a new taproom at Peddlers Village. The featured beer will be the PV Lager, a traditional German marzen-style lager brewed just for OctoberFEAST. Free Will will also have their German style Pilsner and Vienna Lager, as well as the Kragle IPA.
  • Need more beer? Earl’s New American will serve Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Sam Adams Octoberfest and Yuengling Oktoberfest.
  • The Cock ‘n Bull Food Tent will serve up traditional Bavarian dishes like Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, Currywurst, and potato pancakes with apple sauce. Also, try out frankfurters, french fries with sweet mayo, and pretzels with whole grain mustard. For dessert, your options include freshly made cinnamon apple donuts from the Cinnamini Donut Food Truck.
  • The Wine and Spirits Garden features Chaddsford Winery and Hewn Spirits.
  • Live music includes the Philadelphia German Brass Band and Polkadelphia performing German and American party music. Try out the polka, waltz, and march while you are there.

9. TDS Bounty Fest: Bake & Broth

Spend an afternoon with friends and family at Trinity Day School for Solebury’s Bounty Fest. Get some fresh-baked goods from the bake sale, pick up soups from your favorite restaurants and chefs for the cold fall nights ahead, and check out the assortment of food trucks. There will be games for kids and adults, a costume swap, raffles, a yard sale, and other fall activities.

The Bounty Fest is a fundraiser for Trinity Day School. They are seeking to expand the school garden, institute a composting practice for the school and church, and enhance the program offerings for students and the community.

10. 145th Annual Oyster Pork Supper

The Carversville Christian Church is hosting its 145th Annual Oyster and Pork Supper this Saturday, October 15. It’s a home-cooked menu including lean, roast pork, lightly fried oysters, stewed tomatoes, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, applesauce, and desserts. There’s also a craft room for jams, baked goods and crafts. Adults cost $20, children ages five to eight cost $8, and children under five are free. Take-out costs $21. No advance tickets will be sold so purchase yours at the door.

11. Firehouse Breakfasts

I always say, there’s nothing like a big, warm breakfast on a Sunday morning. Even better? Having someone cook for you. This Sunday, October 16, you have two options for a traditional morning breakfast, served up by local firefighters.

  • The Perkasie Fire Company on Fifth and Arch Streets in Perkasie hosts its all-you-can-eat buffet this Sunday. The menu includes eggs, pancakes, waffles, cream dried beef, sausage, bacon, scrapple, home fries, assorted juice and more. Top it off with dessert, too! Adult price $7, children ages four to 12 are $3.50, and three and under are free. Call 215.257.6950 for more information.
  • Also on Sunday at the Riegelsville Fire Company, breakfast is served from 8 am – 12 pm and includes traditional morning breakfast items like scrapple, creamed dried beef, eggs, ham, sausage, omelets, toast, pancakes and more. All of this cooked by the firefighters, just for you. All proceeds benefit the fire fighting program at Community Fire Company #1, Station 42.

12. Harvest at Wycombe Vineyards

Sunday, October 16, 9 am – 1 pm, Wycombe Vineyards & Winery,1391 Forest Grove Rd., Furlong, PA

Wycombe Vineyards needs your helpful hands! This weekend, they need wine grape pickers to harvest the fruit for the season. Pickers will get a free glass of wine and lunch. Please arrive on time, dress for the outdoors, and bring the following: kitchen scissors or shears, garden gloves, your own lawn chair, sun protective hat, and sunscreen. Also: Beware of bees and yellow jackets! If you’re allergic it’s wise if you don’t pick, since the bees love the grapes this time of year. Please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne. 13. Porterpalooza at Bucks County Brewery

Six epic beers. One day of drinking. If you are a Porter gal or guy, head over to the Bucks County Brewery for some Sunday brews. Porters available for the day includes: The Baltic Porter, Cacao Nib Orange Porter, Barley Nectar Vanilla Porter, Neapolitan Porter, Cappuccino Tiramisu Porter, and a Mocha Espresso Almond Porter. Enjoy music from the Fitch Brothers and tasty BBQ by the Meat Wagon. Beer, music and BBQ, what can go wrong?
