Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock somewhere, you probably know that our local strawberry season is in full swing. This weekend there are four Strawberry Festivals stretching from one end of the county to another. At Shady Brook Farm (Yardley) and Tabora Farm (Hilltown) you can pick your own as well as indulge in lots of strawberry treats. In Doylestown, the Salem United Church of Christ will be holding their annual Strawberry Festival including fresh strawberries, ice cream and homemade cakes. There will also be hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and more. And on Sunday, the Historic Langhorne Association will be hosting a Strawberry Festival too. If you are interested in other farms offering pick-your-own, see our post from last year listing all strawberry locations.

To market, to market. Four more local farmers’ markets open for the season this week. On Saturday morning, stop by the Plumsteadville Grange Farm Market. The Langhorne Farmers’ Market will begin on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday afternoon the farmers’ market at The Playwicki Farm in Feasterville starts and on Thursday the Lower Makefield Farmers’ Market opens.

What can you expect to find? Produce and fruits: asparagus (probably the last), strawberries, spinach, a variety of kale and lettuces, rainbow chard, dandelion greens, kohlrabi, broccoli, Asian turnips, bok choy, pea shoots, snap peas, collards, radishes, leeks, spring onions, garlic scapes, scallions, fiddleheads, zucchini, mushrooms, and dill, parsley and other herbs, plus greenhouse-grown tomatoes.

Many of the markets will also have fresh chicken, eggs, goat and cow cheeses, yogurt, milk and pork from animals living on pasture and without hormones or antibiotics plus 100% grass-fed beef, also free of hormones and antibiotics. Some may have gluten free and vegan products, fair trade, organic, locally roasted coffee, nut butters, breads and sweets, all natural dog food, handmade soaps and hand crafted pottery, as well as bedding and herb plants.

Summer Farm Tours. This Wednesday evening, June 6, is the first summer farm tour hosted by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance. The series opens with an unprecedented tour of the 398-acre Five Spruce Farm – now Delaware Valley College’s Kenneth and Helen Gemmill Campus. The original farm dates back to the 1750s. Today, it is made up of about 150 acres of tillable ground and a five-acre trellised apple orchard of some 2400 trees of 15 different varieties. All the fruit is grown for fresh market and sold wholesale. The remaining grounds are manicured yards and woodlots. The potluck begins at 6 pm followed by the tour at 7 pm. Bring a dish to feed 8-10 people, and your own plates, utensils and chairs. On July 9 the series continues with a visit to the community gardens at the Garden of Reflection in Newtown. August’s farm tour will be at the Myerov Farmily Farm in Perkasie and in October it will take place at the Castle Valley Mill in Doylestown. See the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s website for more information.
