Bucks Food Calendar: December 10, 2014

Although the holiday theme has admittedly taken over the food events of Bucks County, the variety of things to do hasn’t been compromised. This week, Santa will be making stops all over the place (he’s good like that), including brunch for the kids and fancy wine dinners for the adults.

Dinner is served. Tomorrow night, Thursday, December 11, the Spinnerstown Hotel will host the Brasserie d’Achoueffe Beer Dinner from 7 to 10 pm. The annual meal will benefit Toys for Tots. The menu includes duck confit, smoked paprika mussel au gratin, Belgian endive salad, house made herb potato dumpling with tomato miso broth and shaved tasso ham, and house made chocolate cake with salted caramel apple. The meal will be paired with the beers of Brasserie d’Achoueffe, a brewery based in Belgium. The beers include: Brasserie d’Achouffe’s N’ice Chouffe, La Chouffe, Mc Chouffe, Houblon Chouffe, Liefman’s Goudenband, and Ommegang Adoration.

Friday night, December 12, let the Delaware Valley Fire Company in Erwinna take care of the cooking for you at their Spaghetti Dinner. Dinner runs from 5:30 to 7:30.

Here comes Santa Claus. Take the family to Brunch with Santa at The Market at DelVal in Doylestown on Saturday and Sunday morning from 9 am to noon (December 13th & 14th). Homemade breakfast including an omelet Station, French toast, bacon and fresh fruit will be served, along with the opportunity to take photos with the man in the suit.

For grown-up kids, go to the Holiday Weekend with Santa at Old York Cellars on Saturday and Sunday, December 13th & 14th, from 12 to 5 pm both days. Get your picture taken with Santa and then use it on the label of a personalized bottle of wine, then treat yourself to some Christmas cookies from Greensleeves Bakery of Flemington and wine by the fireplace.

Also for the grown ups, the Ho-Ho-Holiday Winemaker’s Dinner at Crossing Vineyards and Winery is at 7 pm on Saturday, December 13. Enjoy a holiday-themed winemaker’s dinner to the sound of carolers, a talk with winemaker Tom Carroll, Jr., and a visit from Santa himself. See the amazing menu below:

Just some festive eating. Okay, so Santa won’t actually be at this one, but there will be holiday goodies at Villa Milagro Vineyards Christmas Wine & Chocolates Event on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14, from 12 to 5 pm on both days. Antoinette’s of Phillipsburg, NJ, will provide chocolate samples to pair with Villa Milagro’s red wines and their special spiced Christmas wine, Feliz Navidad. Chocolate gifts in the shapes of Santa, reindeer and trees and delicate chocolate bonbons will be available to purchase as gifts.

Learn and check holiday treats off of your list at a Holiday Cookie Baking Class, sponsored by Snipes Farm, at the Falls Meeting House in Levittown on Saturday, December 13 from 1 to 3 pm. You’ll learn to make four classic cookie recipes (everything will be provided) and you get to take a bunch home. There will even be a chance to bake some Gluten free cookies, if that’s what you need. The Vintage Grille continues their wine dinner series on Wednesday, December 17 starting at 7 pm with their Holiday Favorites Wine Dinner. They’ll feature five culinary traditions (Poland/Czech Republic, USA, Sicily, Brazil/Mexico, France), each tradition expertly paired with a different complimentary wine. They’ll also have a Holiday Cookie Exchange as part of the evening (participation optional), so bring two dozen of your favorite Holiday treat to share.

To market, to market. Getting your hands on local produce is still totally possible during the winter. The Wrightstown Winter Market starts this Saturday, December 13, from 10 to 11 am, and will continue on the second and fourth Saturday of every month until April. There are other indoor markets as well. An Indoor Farmers Market happens every Thursday throughout the winter season at the Event Center by Cornerstone (formerly the Eagle Fire Hall) and the Princeton Winter Market begins next Thursday, December 18. The Stockton Farmers Market, the Stangl Factory Farmers Market and the Quakertown Farmers Market are open year round.

Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets:  Apples (Keepsake, Braeburn, Fuji, Gold Rush, Pink Lady, Stayman Winesap), beets, blueberries, blackberries, butternut squash, carrots, celeriac, celery root, cheese pumpkins, collard greens, herbs, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, micro-greens, mushrooms, napa cabbage, onions, potatoes, rutabaga, salad greens, strawberries (frozen), sweet potatoes, swiss chard, tatsoi, turnips, watermelon radishes, wheatgrass.

Most markets will also have: eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
