Bucks Food Calendar: August 2, 2013

PeachesIt’s hard to believe it is August for so many reasons. The usual feeling of “where has the time gone” but also this weather! What did we do to deserve such beautiful days in early August? Should be a great night for fireworks in New Hope-Lambertville.

The word this week is PEACHES. Delightful, juicy peaches, popping up everywhere. I wish I had the time and wherewithal to just run around the county sampling all the different varieties at all the different farms (sigh). To find fresh local peaches near you, see our previous post, A circus in your mouth.

Two new peach festivals debut this year. Terhune Orchards in Princeton is putting on their first Just Peachy Festival this coming weekend and, boy, does this look good. A special feature of this new summer festival will be a “Summer Harvest ” farm-to-fork tasting section featuring local chefs who will use locally sources ingredients (and lots of peaches) to prepare recipes for sampling. The tasting area will be open from noon to 4 p.m. both days and admission to the special tasting section is $5 for adults. Children 12 and under are free. You can enjoy food from ComfortFood, Trattoria Rosa Bianca, Triumph Brewing Company, 3 West, Blue Bottle Cafe, OCEANA, The Pickled Heron, Vault Brewing Co. and more. See here for the tasting menu details of each.

Peddler’s Village’s Peach Festival is also new this year and takes place next weekend, August 10 & 11. You’ll be able to pick up some local peaches from Active Acre Farms and Bechdolt’s Orchards, sample a variety of peach butters from Bauman’s Pennsylvania Dutch family farm, feast on some of the great baked goods from Town Crier Bakery, like peach fritters, peach bread pudding, peach pies, peach muffins, peach strudel, peach kuchen, peach cakes and cupcakes, peach turnovers, peach strudel, peach tea breads, peach pull apart bread, peach tarts, and peach butter cake. Is that enough for you? There will also be peach pie eating contests in three age categories: 10 and under, 11-14 and 15 and up. For more information, see their website.

Manoff's Donut PeachesNext weekend also is Manoff Market Gardens’ annual Peach Festival. Manoff’s has a real variety of peaches. In this week are white peaches (Sugar May) and donut peaches are just starting. The first week of August they will be harvesting Red Haven yellow peaches and Raritan Rose white peaches.

To market, to market. Look for… basil, beets, blackberries, blueberries (hopefully), cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, dandelion greens, eggplant, fennel, garlic (fresh), heirloom tomatoes, green peppers, lettuce and lettuce mixes, okra, onions (fresh), parsley, peaches, potatoes (new), radishes, rosemary, scallions, shallots, string beans, summer squash, sunflowers, Swiss chard, thyme, tomatillos, turnips, and zucchini.

You’ll also find eggs from pasture-raised chickens, baked goods, pasture-raised beef and pork, cheese, yogurt and lots more. See our listing of area farmers’ markets for the one near you.
