The calendar is popping with food activities as we swing into autumn. So much going on!
The 47th Polish-American Festival continues this weekend at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, so if you missed the pierogies last weekend, here’s your chance. Speaking of pierogies, St. Anne Ukrainian Church resumes their Wednesday Pierogies this September 12. Just call in the morning and pick up your homemade pierogies in the afternoon. Dinner’s done. To learn more about this delicious weekly happening, read our post about the ladies (and men) who make the pierogies.
Savor New Hope, a fundraiser for New Hope Arts, takes place on Sunday, September 9 this year. The gala gives you a chance to taste offerings from 18 local restaurants (what I call “eating for a good cause”) for only $45 per person. The event begins at 6 pm. Go here to buy tickets and get more information.
Back to school…and eating healthy. This Thursday check out these two workshops on starting the new year healthy. At McCaffrey‘s supermarket in Yardley, registered dietitian Jill Kwasny will teach “Healthful Foods in a Hurry,” simple tricks to incorporate a balance of quality nutrition and convenience. The event takes place September 13 from 10 am to 12 pm. Also on Thursday, Chef Melissa of A la Maison Chef Service will demonstrate fresh ideas and kid-friendly recipes to help create healthy, balanced school lunches incorporating principles from the “My Plate” initiative. The class is from 10 am to 12 pm at the Solebury Club in Buckingham.
On the horizon. Next weekend there are two fundraisers taking place. “Rock Your Veggies” is a farm dance party (no…really) to raise money for the Snipes Farm and Education Center in Morrisville. The party begins at 7 pm on Saturday, September 15. All proceeds benefit their Farm to School education programs as well as the work they do with local food pantries. Up county, the 7th Annual Wine + Polo event will take over Tinicum State Park on Route 32/River Road on Saturday, September 15 from 1 pm to 5 pm. Watch polo, eat tasty food from great local restaurants and help out the Bucks County SPCA. You can buy tickets here.
To market, to market. Here’s what you can expect to find at area farm markets this week: sweet and hot peppers, sweet corn, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, heirloom, cherry, plum and slicing tomatoes, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, potatoes, basil, various eggplants, broccoli, garlic, onions, scallions, cucumbers, cabbages, savoy cabbage, patty pan squash, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, red and striped beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuces, chard, Brussel sprouts, collards, kale, mustard greens, radishes, dill, parsley, cilantro. Most markets will also have free range eggs, pastured meats, baked goods, flowers and more. Check here for your closest farmers’ market.
