What a week it has been. When I was last writing the weekly calendar, we were all preparing for a Category 2 hurricane. Thank goodness it weakened and wasn’t as bad as predicted. Unfortunately some folks did lose power for awhile and Mother Nature did a little early fall pruning. Area farms got hit in varying degrees. One friend told me Doylestown got MUCH more rain than even Wrightstown, which got “only” 5-7 inches. Some corn fields got flattened; most other fields got blown around a lot. Let’s hope the worst is over and we don’t get another hurricane this season.
And…it’s Labor Day weekend. Lots going on this weekend and in September in general. Here’s the highlights:
- The 46th Annual Polish-American Festival takes place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, just north of Doylestown. The festivities – and the food – start this weekend and continue next weekend. See their website for more information.
- Farm-to-Table Dinners abound! This Sunday evening is the second in the Kitchen Potager’s September series of farm-to-table dinners featuring wonderful local chefs. Enjoy Yafo Faro and her Mediterranean vegetarian cuisine this Sunday, September 4th. Next weekend brings Chef Drew Abbate from the Vine and Fig Tree Bistro, preparing a fresh fish-inspired menu, on Sunday, September 11. See the website for details and watch for an article soon on Bucks County Taste.
- Apple season has begun. And pick-your-own (PYO) apples season too. Two local orchards are open this weekend for PYO apples. Solebury Orchards in Solebury is open today, Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm and is currently harvesting Gala apples. Terhune Orchards in Princeton is also open Saturday and Sunday this weekend from 9 am to 6 pm. And if you don’t feel like picking your own, you can also stop by Manoff Market Gardens which have Ginger Gold, Sanza and Zestar apples.
- Summer Farm Tour at Snipes Farm. Alas, the final summer farm tour sponsored by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance will take place this Wednesday, September 7. The evening begins with a potluck at 6:30 pm followed by a tour of this multi-generational family farm and education center. Don’t miss this one! Each farm tour this season has been very well attended (translation: lots of great food) and fascinating. Meet your farmer and get a good meal too. For more information see the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s website and the Snipes Farm & Education Center website for directions. See you there!
