Bucks Food Calendar: October 28, 2011

As I make my way through the candy corn and spice cookies, I’m contemplating winter. Yes, winter. Tomorrow we’re supposed to get some snow. Gone by Sunday for sure but really? November is probably my least favorite month, no longer crisp fall days but not pretty snowy ones either. There’s Thanksgiving, it’s true. My favorite holiday meal but it’s weeks away! So get into your costumes, imbibe some fun drinks and food and enjoy the end of October this weekend.

Wine and music. I’ve noticed the calendar getting a little less busy too. But…I’ve also noticed how many wineries are offering nice music to go with their wine. There’s Fridays Unplugged at Crossing Vineyards, featuring acoustical performers from Latin to jazz to country. Hopewell Valley Vineyards in Hopewell, NJ, offers music on both Fridays and Saturdays every weekend. Join Old York Cellars their Jazz and Wine Brunch. Just pack up your favorite brunch delights and spend the afternoon at the winery. Wines are available for purchase by the glass and bottle at all wineries.

Pancakes anyone? Palate, in Newtown, will be holding a pancake breakfast fundraiser for Susan G. Komen for the Cure on this Sunday. Fifteen dollars gets you a plate of Palate’s famous pancakes, choice of meat, fresh fruit and beverage – and a good feeling. If you’re planning on being in Upper Bucks on Sunday, stop by the Haycock Fire Company for their monthly firehouse breakfast. Or stop by for the breakfast buffet at the Knights of Columbus Father Gallen Council in Warrington, also on Sunday. Directions and details can be found on our full calendar at Food Events in Bucks County.

To market, to market. Although some farmers’ markets have finished for the season, there are quite a few still going into November – Doylestown, Wrightstown, New Hope, Plumsteadville, Hunterdon Land Trust, and, of course, Stockton, which is indoor and year round. Wrightstown and New Hope will also be holding once monthly winter markets. More on that later.

For now, here’s what you can expect to find at area markets: apples, winter squash and pumpkins, broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, celeriac, kale, collards and other greens, cabbages, leeks, Swiss chard, radishes, apple cider and cider donuts, and locally foraged wild maitake and other mushrooms, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, okra, fennel, beans, lettuce, basil, parsley, herbs, potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, and red beets. Many markets also have available 100% grass-fed beef, pasture raised chicken, eggs, goat cheeses, yogurt, butter, breads, baked goods, organic, fair trade locally roasted coffees, prepared foods, natural pet foods, handmade lotions, and artisanal goods.

Finally, don’t miss Use Your Gourd: A Winter Squash Tasting, hosted by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance. Think squash are boring? Think again. The Foodshed Alliance put this program on last year, led by Brenda Slack of the Milk House Farm, and it was fascinating. So many different kinds of squash and pumpkins, all edible and yummy. There will be samples of many with culinary tips by Slack. The event takes place at the Doylestown Mennonite Church, at East Sandy Ridge Road at Settlers Drive/North Broad Street in Doylestown (right near the bypass. For more information see the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s website.
