Boo!
That’s the word of the week. Because Halloween falls on a weekday this year there are lots of parties going on this weekend. To name just a few, tonight there is a Prohibition Halloween Party at Trompa’s Wine Bar in Doylestown. Be sure to knock three times and give the password to get in. Party like it’s 1929, which I guess is appropriate the economy being what it is. At least we have legal alcohol!
On Saturday evening, strut about in costume at McCoole’s Halloween Party in Quakertown or at Triumph Brewing Company in New Hope. I’m sure there are a lot more Halloween festivities going on in New Hope too. I don’t think you’d be the only one walking around in costume.
Speaking of libations, there’s several harvest-themed events going on this week at local wineries and restaurants. Check out Pumpkin Weekend at Old York Cellars in Ringoes, NJ (all weekend) or the Hallowine Celebration at Crossing Vineyards in Washington Crossing (Sunday). Wednesday night (Halloween) the Washington House in Sellersville will be holding a Pumpkin Beer Tasting. Oh my.
Stop by Olive Oil Etcetera in Doylestown on Saturday for an Olio Nuovo Tasting Party. Taste recently harvested olive oil (two weeks ago!) drizzled on caprese, on cheese and on bread, and paired with Cabernet Franc from Wycombe Vineyards.
As the weather gets cooler, I start thinking about soup. I guess I’m not the only one. At Stockton Market this Sunday you’ll be able to sample soups from several vendors including Manhattan Clam Chowder from Metropolitan Seafood, Mushroom Soup from Mushrooms Etc., chili from Highland Gourmet, Dawn McBeth’s Harvest Pumpkin Soup, End of Season Tomato Soup and Spanish Potato Soup. Culinara will be sampling Chicken Soup and Carrot & Ginger Soup and the coffee bar in the cafe will be sampling a super food soup, Curried Red Lentil with Chickpeas & Quinoa. Taste and bring some home for dinner.
To market, to market. Here’s what you can expect to find at area farmers’ markets this week: spinach and green beans along with apples, leeks, broccoli, cabbages, celery root, beets, turnips, vitamin and mineral-packed lettuces, chard, collards, kale varieties, mizuna, radishes, and parsley, all kinds of carotene-rich winter squash, cultivated and locally foraged mushrooms, potatoes, garlic and onions. Beyond produce, many markets will have hormone and antibiotic-free, pasture-raised chicken, eggs, mozzarella and goat cheeses, smoothies, yogurt and milk, pasture-raised pork and 100% grass-fed beef as well as prepared foods like sauces, fruit butters, apple juice, gluten free and vegan products and baked goods.
