Bucks Food Calendar: October 19, 2012

It may be rainy today but the weekend looks great and the leaves are reaching “peak.” A great time to get out and enjoy Bucks County. Here are some of the more interesting things to do – and eat.

This Saturday will be the 141st Oyster Pork Supper at the Carversville Christian Church. For $19 per person you’ll get pork roast, hand dipped fried oysters, creamed corn (corn from None Such Farms), stewed tomatoes, mashed potatoes, pepper hash, homemade applesauce (apples from Solebury Orchards) and dessert made by church members. Does it get any better? It starts at 3 pm and goes until 8 pm – or until they run out.

For other church suppers, check out the annual Ham Supper at the Solebury United Methodist Church in New Hope on Friday from 5 – 7 pm and the Chicken Pot Pie Dinner at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Sellersville on Saturday from 4 – 7 pm. See the full Food Events in Bucks County calendar for details.

The 7th Annual Newtown BrewFest takes place on Saturday at the Newtown Athletic Club (new site for this fest – it will both indoors and outside). The festivities begin at 12 pm with music and plenty of beers to sample. What a great way to enjoy the beautiful fall day!

Come out on Sunday for the Doylestown Food Co-op’s Local Fest and Chili Cook-Off. There will be pumpkin carving, face painting, live music, and the main event: a chili cook-off, featuring chefs from many local restaurants in the “pro” division and co-op members in the “home cooking” division. All chili entries will have at least one local ingredient. The fun starts at 3 pm and takes place at the Community Education Center on Cold Spring Creamery Road in Doylestown. Tickets are $7 for Doylestown Food Co-op members, $10 for general public. Children under 5 are free.

Of course there are still plenty of fall festivals happening around the county. Quakertown will be holding their Autumn Alive! celebration on Saturday. Pumpkins and fall fun can be found all weekend at Snipes Farm in Morrisville, None Such Farm in Buckingham, Tabora Farm in Chalfont, The Market at Del Val in Doylestown, Shady Brook Farm in Yardley and Froehlich’s Farm in Furlong.

Earl’s Bucks County continues their Tasty Thursday series with a dinner featuring Frog’s Leap wine. Frog’s Leap’s fine wines will be paired with a five course dinner on Thursday, October 25 at 7 p.m. Cost is $70 per person. Call 215.794.4020 for reservations.

To market, to market. Most of Bucks County’s farmers markets are still open through October with plenty of local veggies and other locally produced products available. Here’s what you can expect to find: freshly picked apples, leeks, broccoli, cabbages, celery root, beets, turnips, lettuce, chard, collards, kale, mizuna, raddichio, radishes, parsley, cultivated and locally foraged mushrooms, winter squash and freshly pressed apple cider. If they survived the frost earlier this week, there might be sweet corn, sweet and hot peppers and eggplant as well as bok choy, carrots, cauliflower, potatoes, garlic and onions.
