Wow. There is SO much going on this weekend. Where to start?
The Ottsville Farmers’ Market finishes their season this afternoon from 4 – 8 pm. Join in the fun and festivities as this unique market closes out for 2012.
There are six firehouse breakfasts and dinners this weekend starting with a Spaghetti Dinner at the Delaware Valley Fire Co. in Erwinna tonight. The West Amwell Firehouse (NJ) will hold their annual Roast Pork Dinner on Saturday and the Plumsteadville Fire Co. will have one of their famous Roast Beef Dinners on Saturday as well. On Sunday morning there are two breakfasts – one at the Silverdale Firehouse and the other at the Upper Black Eddy Fire Co. Finally there is a Ham Dinner at the Sellersville Firehouse on Sunday afternoon.
Harvest Festivals are everywhere! Find the nearest one, go pick a pumpkin and have a good time at Snipes Farm in Morrisville, None Such Farm in Buckingham, the Market at Del Val in Doylestown, Tabora Farm in Chalfont, Trauger’s in Kintersville and the 27th Annual Country Fair in Warminster. I’m sure I’ve missed one or two. Just drive around and pull over when you see pumpkins!
Market Days. This is kind of a subset of harvest festivals and a lot of local towns are having them. On Saturday join the celebrations at Warwick Day, Chalfont Day or Historic Fallsington Day.
Food and Fundraisers. People come up with the most interesting and fun ways to raise money. Tonight at the Full Moon Cafe in Lambertville they will be having dinner and taking donations for the National Lung Cancer Partnership in honor of one of their employees who is battling lung cancer. RSVPs are strongly urged. Tonight is the annual gala at the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Cocktails at the Castle, where you can roam the museum and enjoy food from some great area restaurants and food purveyors. On Thursday, Upper Bucks Foodie: A Culinary Adventure takes place in Quakertown and the money goes to local scholarships. Or stop by Oktoberfest at the Dog & Bull Brew & Music House in Croydon to help raise money for Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Finally, in New Hope, also on Thursday, there is a Guest Bartender Fundraising Event at New Hope Lodge to benefit the American Cancer Society.
To market, to market. Here’s the harvest you can expect to find at area farmers’ markets: Freshly picked sweet corn (STILL!), sweet and hot peppers and possibly last of zucchini, cucumbers and tomatoes. There will also probably be beans, potatoes, onions, and eggplant, as well as winter squash in all their glory, apples, leeks, broccoli, garlic, cabbages, celery root, beets, turnips, lettuce, chard, collards, kale, mizuna, raddichio, radishes, parsley and freshly pressed apple cider. It’s a great time to pick up extra to freeze. You’ll probably also find free range eggs, pasture-raised meats, honey, baked goods, specialty foods and more at most markets.
