Bucks Food Calendar: July 19, 2013

It's always a good time for ice creamLet’s not even talk about the weather. Drink lots of water and stay cool.

But, hey, Sunday is National Ice Cream Day! Celebrate with a friend and eat some good, local ice cream, water ice or custard. Here’s our listing of places you can eat cool treats in Bucks County (let me know if I’ve missed any of your favorites).

Things are a little quiet this week but there are a few things definitely worth mentioning.

Harpoon Beer-UFOWhiteAt the Yardley Inn, enjoy the Harpoon Brewery Beer Dinner, a set of five Harpoon beers, each paired with a creative course prepared by Yardley Inn Sous Chef Joshua Noel. “The range of flavors represents where I have worked and what I have seen, from Caribbean flavors in the first course, to the love of Jersey peaches in the fourth course, and also my love of beer from my home state of Massachusetts,” Noel says. “I would say it’s my way of paying homage to the beer where I am from by cooking the food from where I have been.”

The dinner takes place this Thursday, July 25 at 7 pm. To see the full menu, visit the Yardley Inn’s website. Guests will also receive Harpoon Brewery mementos, including a free pint glass, key chain, and bottle opener. The cost to attend is $55 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Call 215-493-3800 or visit www.yardleyinn.com to make reservations.

After the weather supposedly breaks, Sunday should be a great day to go for a ride for breakfast at the Riegelsville Fire House. They have been serving breakfast every month for over 20 years. They know how to do it. When you sit down, there is a menu with at least a dozen items on it (variations on eggs, hotcakes, French toast, ham, sausage, scrapple, creamed beef and more) at your place setting, the most of expensive of which – the Firefighter’s Special – is only $6.75. Circle what you would like, and the good women of the Ladies Auxiliary take the order and deliver the food, cooked by the company’s firefighters. It is a real community event and a lot of fun. To learn more, read our previous post.

To market, to market. New arrivals this week! Cherry tomatoes, peaches, eggplant, fresh garlic, fresh onions, raspberries and apricots. What else might you see at area farmers’ markets? Arugula, beets, blackberries, heirloom tomatoes, blueberries, broccoli rabe, cabbage, Corn; photo by L. Goldmancantaloupes, carrots, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, eggplant, fennel, garlic, herbs, leeks, head lettuce, beans, variety of fresh onions, peppers, new potatoes, radishes, salad mix, scallions, summer squash, string beans, sunflowers, sweet corn, Swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips, wild foraged mushrooms and zucchini.
