Bucks Food Calendar: July 13, 2012

This Sunday is National Ice Cream Day. Why we need a special day to indulge in ice cream, I don’t know, but what the heck, go for it. Visit your favorite ice cream parlor or check out our list of ice cream places in Bucks County and try a new one. Yum.

Ever been to a food swap? Here’s your chance. The Upper Bucks Food Swap is meeting in Kintersville this Sunday, July 15 at 1:00 pm. Don’t know what a food swap is? If you like food and enjoy cooking, gardening or raise animals and use their products, such as eggs, fleece, milk or meat then a food swap is for you. It’s fun and a great way to expand your pantry. Members of a swap are from a local/regional community and bring items that they’ve made or grown themselves and swap them for items others have brought. Author and food writer, Marisa McClellan will be on hand to sign her book, Food in Jars. RSVPs are a must. See this website to sign up: http://ubcfoodswap.eventbrite.com/.

Bastille Day is this Saturday, July 14 and is being celebrated locally. Frenchtown, NJ, not surprisingly, has a big party which this year will take place on Saturday. See their website for more information. Zoubi’s in New Hope will also be celebrating with a special dinner menu on Sunday evening as will the Yardley Inn on Saturday.

To market, to market. What can you expect to find at area farm stands and farmers’ markets? Sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, green beans, new potatoes, basil, eggplant, fennel, sunflowers and bouquets, fresh garlic, spring onions, blueberries, cucumbers, cabbages, patty pan, zucchini, yellow squash, red beets, Asian turnips, kohlrabi, kale, lettuces, chard, broccoli, bok choy, tat soi, collards, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro and other herbs. Most markets will also have pasture raised meats, eggs, baked goods, cheese and more.

Stop by the Ottsville Farmers’ Market this afternoon between 4 pm and 6 pm if you’d like a delicious taco from Jose Garces’ Guapos Taco Truck. It’s always a favorite and they sometimes sell out, so get there early. The market is at Linden Hill Gardens, 8230 Easton Road (Route 611) in Ottsville.
