Bucks Food Calendar: August 31, 2012

Goodbye summer, hello autumn! I suppose that’s what Labor Day always feels like – the last hurrah of summer – but especially this year with the cooler temps we’ve been enjoying. May get a little rain on Labor Day, but other than that the weekend looks gorgeous.

Labor Day weekend also means two big food festivals – the Polish-American Festival and the Pocono Garlic Festival. The 47th Polish-American Festival will take place this weekend and next at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown. Lots of good Polish food will be on hand and I guess there’ll be other things to do too. I just think about food. I don’t know if we’ll make it up to the Pocono Garlic Festival this weekend but, if not, there is always the Easton Garlic Festival in early October.

This Friday night is the LAST night for fireworks in New Hope. So get your butt over there and send out summer with style. The Full Moon Cafe is having their once monthly “Full Moon Dinner” on Friday night as well. Reservations are strongly suggested. Call 609.397.1096. The cafe is on 23 Bridge Street in Lambertville. See our full food calendar for details of the dinner.

To market, to market. What can you expect to find at area farmers’ markets this week? Sweet corn, gala apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, heirloom, cherry, plum and slicing tomatoes, green beans, okra, sunflowers and bouquets, red, white and blue potatoes, various basils, striped, purple and Italian eggplant, broccoli, garlic, onions, scallions, cucumbers, cabbages, savoy cabbage, patty pan, squash zucchini, yellow squash, red and striped beets, turnips, kohlrabi, lettuces, Swiss and ruby chard, brussel sprouts, collards, kale, mustard greens, radishes, mushrooms, dill, parsley, cilantro. You’ll also find free range eggs, meat raised on pasture, baked goods, interesting jams, honey and more. Check here for your closest farmers’ market.
