Local foodie gifts: Cookbooks & aprons

‘Tis the season to buy lots of fun gifts for all your favorite cooks! All this week and next, I’m going to do posts on great, local gifts for the foodies in your life. Let’s start today with aprons and cookbooks.

Whenever I’m cooking, I’m constantly washing and wiping my hands…and desperately looking for the dishtowel. No more! Thanks to the snap to it! apron by the Diaper Bag Wrangler I’ve got it all in one. This innovative apron was designed by KC Agneta, a stay-at-home mom and cancer survivor, who lives in Montgomery County. There is both a full apron and half apron version. Each apron features a completely removable dishtowel that  snaps underneath the waistband – and snaps off to throw in the wash. The towels are thick, absorbent ribbed terrycloth. You can even buy a replacement towel to switch out when the dirty one is in the wash. The aprons are available in ten different fabrics, lined with 100% organic unbleached muslin lining. Save 20% on web orders through December 10th by using the coupon code “DECEMBER”, valid at: The Diaper Wrangler and at the Esty Shop. Get one for all the cooks on your list.

As for cool, locally written cookbooks you need look no further than the Canal House Cooking series, available individually for $19.95 or as a yearly subscription (3 volumes) for $49.95. These lovely, seasonal cookbooks are written and photographed by Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer in their Lambertville, New Jersey food studio. Melissa is a co-founder of Hamilton’s Grill Room in Lambertville and former food editor at Cooks Illustrated, Saveur and Martha Stewart Living. Christopher was food and design editor for Metropolitan Home, and one of the founders of Saveur. The cookbooks come out three times a year, in tune with the seasons, each full of timely recipes, anecdotes and luscious photography. For more background see our previous posts, Canal House Cooking for the winter, and Canal House Cooking: A local voice. You can buy the books directly from Canal House Cooking, from Amazon or at local bookstores like Farley‘s in New Hope and the Doylestown Bookshop.
