Bucks County is berry, berry good

Oh it’s that time of year. Luscious blueberries and raspberries are abundant this year, due to a fortuitous combination of appropriate weather. Here’s a listing of where to go for local blueberries and raspberries.

Blueberries

Finding local blueberries is tough, if you don’t count Hammonton, New Jersey as local, where so many of our blueberries come from. But if you want to stay in Bucks County and nearby, here are your choices:

Shady Brook Farm is currently offering blueberries and raspberries for picking and for purchase in their store. You can find them in Yardley, on Stony Hill Road near the Newtown bypass. Snipes Farm and Education Center has pick-your-own blueberries available now (and thornless blackberries later). See their website for availability and information. They are in Morrisville. Call them at 215.295.1139.

Solebury Orchards is a favorite spot for all seasonal fruit in Bucks County, including berries, but also apricots (now), raspberries, blackberries, peaches, plums, pears, apples and more. They post weekly updates on their website on what is available for purchase and pick-your-own. Right now? “Look for blueberry picking to continue through mid August and Raspberries to be abundant for the next couple of weeks. Raspberries are especially full this week.” How’s that for up to date? You can find them at 3325 Creamery Road, New Hope, PA 18938, 215-297-8079, open Thursdays through Sundays 9 am to 6 pm.

Wildemore Farm also has blueberries and raspberries for pick-your-own. You can find them at 977 Upper Stump Road in Chalfont, PA (at Upper Church & Lower Stump Roads). Call for specific crops and pick-your-own hours at 215.249.3683. Right now you can pick Wednesdays from 9 am to 1 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm.

If you’re willing to cross the river, Terhune Orchards in Princeton is actually having a Blueberry Bash next weekend, July 9 & 10. See their website for more info. You can find them at 330 Cold Soil Road, Princeton, NJ, Call 609.924.2310 for availability.

Raspberries

A little more abundant and starting to come into season – and lasting longer than the blueberry season – are raspberries. Here’s a quick list of where you can find them locally and who offers pick-your-own.

Brumbaugh’s Farm, 2575 County Line Road, Telford, PA, 215-723-3508. Open Monday through Saturday. Pick your own.

Lapinski Farm, 1003 Middle Road, Dublin, PA, 215.249.3431. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 – 7 pm, Saturday 8 am – 3 pm, and also at the Plumsteadville Grange Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings.

Palovchak’s Produce, 1541 Lower State Road, Doylestown, PA, 215.272.2200. Farm stand is open during daylight hours.

Penn Vermont Fruit Farm, Route 113 & Rolling Hills Road, Bedminster, PA, 215.795.0230 (pick your own). A treasure trove of berries and fruits, if you are serious about canning and jamming, this is the place to go. Call ahead for dates and hours for pick your own and availability.

Finally, if you are into sour cherries, head on over to Myers Orchard outside of Quakertown at 2260 Keiper Road, 215.679.8400. They’ve got sour (pie) cherries still available (sweet cherries are done; sorry). Give them a call for specific hours. Bring your own containers and a ladder.
