Get out of the house this weekend!

Need I say more? I think we are all feeling this way, tired of looking at the mounds of white stuff surrounding our homes. The roads are clear and dry and the weather looks pretty decent. Oh, yeah, there’s some “snow showers” in the forecast but after this week – ha! What’s a coupla’ stinkin’ snow showers?

So, you want to get out of the house. Here are some fun possibilities, starting in Upper Bucks and moving south.

  • The Ottsville Indoor Farmers’ Market takes place Saturday from 9 am – 12 pm in the greenhouse at Linden Hill Gardens (8230 Easton Road / Route 611) in Ottsville. There will be sledding on Mt. Linden and the barn hill, so bring your sled (or borrow theirs). This new winter market is happening every Saturday morning through February so stop by for fresh eggs, scrumptious homemade sweets, jams, pies and soups, locally raised meats, fresh bread, a wide array of mushrooms, hot chocolate and coffee, seasonal plants, herbs and salad greens and gourmet dog biscuits. That’s not all: there will be artists’ works such as candles, photographs, glass etchings, wool and silk scarves and more.
  • Go have breakfast at Vera’s Country Cafe, a lovely restaurant just up the road from Linden Hill, on Route 412, on the right hand side going north. Their breakfasts are good – interesting, filling and delicious. Both their regular menu and specials are great. From the traditional creamed chip beef over potatoes, to creme brulee french toast, to specialty omelets, there is something for everyone. Just be prepared for a line on weekends. See more photos and their address at their Facebook page.
  • After stuffing your face at Vera’s, make a left onto Durham Road (Route 412) and drive a minute down the road to oWowCow Creamery – who will be closing for the month of February. Yes, it’s true. This delicious ice creamery, using local ingredients and as many organic or all natural sources as they can get, will be taking a break. Time to stock up the freezer!
  • Sunday also brings a nice firehouse breakfast at the Haycock Fire Company on 850 Old Bethlehem Road near Quakertown. It’s a good breakfast, staring at 8 am and going to noon. Six dollars gets adults a full breakfast (eggs, pancakes, meats, fruit, coffee, etc.); Children 4-7: $4; Children up to 3 are free. For more info see their website.
  • If you just can’t get out of bed early enough for all this, slide on over to 1821 Steak & Cocktails on Friday or Saturday evening. This “new” restaurant on 1821 River Road in Upper Black Eddy (used to be The Canal Bar) has become one of our favorites –  perfect steaks, reasonable prices and a very laid back atmosphere, where you can hang out with friends and enjoy good, fresh food. If you want to know more, see our post from last summer.
  • Of course, lots of folks will be in the New Hope-Lambertville area for the second and last weekend of Winter Fest. There are still tickets left for the Beef & Brew on Saturday, January 29, 2 – 4:30 pm, at the Triumph Brewing Company. Tickets are $40 ($30 for non-alcohol). See their website for more info and to purchase tickets online. The Winter Festival is hosting again this year a food drive for Fisherman’s Mark Pantry in Lambertville. Food donation canisters will be provided along the parade route as well as at all ticketed events. Another organization, DogDaddy.org is also collecting food – only dog food. This food will go to feed the dogs of people in financial distress whose only other option is to give their dogs up for adoption to local rescues or shelters. The Winter Festival Parade is on January 29, starting at 12:00 noon at the New Hope-Solebury High School and continuing down Bridge Street into Lambertville.
  • Saturday would also be a fine time to visit the Stockton (Indoor) Farmers’ Market since Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse will be making an appearance with some of the “best cheese they have had in 21 years.” Hyperbole? Who cares? I know it will be good cheese, and it’s closer than driving up to Milford to their farm!
  • And…while you’re in Stockton, stop in at Phillips Fine Wines for a special wine tasting of Abbe Ranch wines with proprietor Jay Abbe himself. You can get a look behind the scenes of one of California’s great winemakers at Phillips (right next to the Stockton Market) from 12 to 6 pm on Saturday, January 29.
  • Speaking of wine, this is a great time of year to visit local wineries. Many have special events going on, especially for Valentine’s Day, but if you go on an off weekend, you may have the winemaker to yourself. Check out Wycombe Vineyards, a small, family-run European-style winery in Forest Grove, or Crossing Vineyards in Washington Crossing. For more ideas, see the Bucks County Wine Trail and the Warren Hunterdon Wine Trail at the Garden State Wine Growers’ Association website for wineries just over the river in New Jersey.

Off you go! Leave the snowmen behind and have a wonderful, warm weekend.
