In these times, one can get a little overwhelmed reading the news. So much hardship in so many places. How rejuvenating then to see people coming together and accomplishing good things, right in our own backyard. I’m constantly amazed at the number of fundraisers going on in Bucks County year-round. Here are two worth your while.
Arts For The Manor is a program to bring artists into Neshaminy Manor, a skilled nursing facility, to work with residents on a weekly basis. Every spring they hold a brunch and art show to raise funds to support this program. This is the event’s 9th year and it takes place on Sunday, April 3rd from 11 am to 2 pm. Area restaurants, chefs, bakers and specialty food suppliers will be providing the brunch, including: Meil’s, Just Foods, Issac Newtons, The Cafe at Rosemont, J. Scones, Sodexho Food Service, Heavenly Ham, Haring Brothers, Crossroads Bakery, Uno’s Bar & Grill, Houlihans, Solly Brothers Farm, Acme, Giant, Wegman’s, Kenny’s, Vaders, the Buck Hotel, and more. It’s one thing to bemoan the lack of affordable health care – or take potshots at your least favorite politician – but Healthlink has been doing something about it since opening their free clinic in March 2001. Eugene Jackson, a philanthropist and co-founder of Springhouse Corporation, a healthcare publishing company, established HealthLink Medical Center in March 1999. While serving on the Board at Abington Memorial Hospital, Mr. Jackson had the opportunity to visit a volunteer clinic in Chester County. He was so impressed with the work being done there that he came away with a burning desire to open a volunteer clinic for working uninsured adults living in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
Today, HealthLink provides primary medical and dental care to individuals and families, ages 19 to 65 who are employed, who do not have healthcare insurance, and whose earnings fall within 200% of the annually published federal poverty guidelines. Free care is provided at the Southampton clinic (1775 Street Rd.) by experienced volunteer healthcare professionals, including doctors, dentists, nurse practitioners, dental hygienists, nurses and administrators. HealthLink also provides free prescription medication to patients requiring pharmaceutical intervention. The clinic is open for patient care five days a week and two Tuesday evenings per month.
So what does all this have to do with eating?
On the evening of Friday, April 29, former White House Chef Walter Scheib will serve up a taste – through stories and recipes – of his eleven years as White House chef spanning both the Clinton and Bush administration at the A Taste of the White House Soireé, a first in the Delaware Valley. The menu will include Sesame Crusted Halibut, created especially for Chelsea Clinton; Tequila Glazed Smoked Angus Tenderloin, a favorite of the Bushs’ and Scheib’s signature Honey and Lavender Ice Cream, among other dishes. The event will take place at the beautiful Manufacturers’ Golf and Country Club in Fort Washington, Pa. Although they are expecting to sell out the event (at 250+ guests), sponsors are still welcome. “It’s a great cause, and a great opportunity to get in front of many people,” says Jessie Marushak, Healthlink’s Development Coordinator.
A live auction will also be part of the evening, including a 5-Star VIP Vacation at a Premier Palace Resort; a first class Washington, DC excursion; and a meal prepared by chef Walter Scheib at your home.
