Bucks Food Calendar: November 19, 2010 – Thanksgiving

AGGH! Thanksgiving is next week! There. Got that out of my system.

Not to worry. Not only can you buy lots of the ingredients you’ll need for the festive occasion locally, you can get someone else to do the cooking too. See our post, 2010 – Going out for Thanksgiving in Bucks for listings of restaurants and places you can get the meal catered. And if you’re interested in some new recipes, check out our posts from last year and 2008 for some ideas. Not sure about wines? See our post from last year on wines for the holidays and check out the post on Bucks Happening that came out this week.

This has got to be one of the easier holidays to eat “seasonally,” and hence, locally. Lots of the traditional dishes are ones our American ancestors had at hand, including the turkey. Sweet potatoes, white potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, brussel sprouts, greens, lettuces, mushrooms, winter squashes, apples, applesauce, cider, beets, herbs, cheeses, breads, baked goods and more…you can all get at your local farmers’ markets. For the Wrightstown (Saturdays), Doylestown (Saturdays), Hunterdon Land Trust (Sundays) and New Hope Farmers’ Markets (Thursdays), this is the last week of the regular season. The Stockton Market will be open throughout the winter (indoors!) every weekend.

Stop by the Wrightstown Market this Saturday for Producer and Customer Appreciation Day and slurp a free soup lunch made from Bucks County farm fresh ingredients, along with breads, desserts and beverages. The regular weekly market will return on May 7, 2011. But on the second Saturday of each month until then (December 11 – April 9) you can buy goods from your favorite vendors at a short “pick-up” market from 10 am to 11 am. The New Hope Farmers’ Market will be doing a similar winter market on the third Thursday of each month. See more info at their website.

Start thinking of locally produced gifts too! Visit any of the markets above this week to check out some cool gift ideas – honey, preserves, sweet treats, olive oil, coffee and teas, wine, wool products, jewelry, baskets, soaps and lotions, and gift certificates. The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance (BCFA) will be hosting the 2nd Annual Holidays from the Farm on Wednesday, December 1st from
5 to 8:30 pm
at the Northampton Library in Richboro. Come with your gift list and snap up lots of local, delicious items to give this season. There will be local foods to taste too, provided by Soup to Nuts, Ambrosia, The Coffee Scoop, Snipes Farm and some mystery chefs! See the BCFA’s website for more info.

While you’re being thankful for your blessings this year, remember those who are struggling. Stop by the Stockton Inn on Thanksgiving or before to donate to their annual Thanksgiving benefit, all proceeds going to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, a very worthy organization. At the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market you can buy some extra goods and drop them off at the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance table. The food will be delivered to folks at the Bucks County Housing Group. Or donate goods to any of the many food pantries in the area, or even at the check-out line in local supermarkets. Many offer the opportunity to donate at the register, with proceeds going to area hunger agencies.
