Bucks Food Calendar: November 12, 2014

terhune orchards pies

Halloween is over and we’re moving fast towards Thanksgiving and the December holidays. The stores are getting ready and Peddler’s Village already has their holiday lights up! Here are some fun ideas to get you ready.

Start with a Holiday Gifts from the Pantry Cooking Class hosted by the Community School of New Hope-Solebury tonight, Wednesday, November 12 from 6:30 to 9 pm.

Turkey out of ovenDemystify the main event of Thanksgiving at Carlow Cookery with their Preparing and Roasting the Perfect Turkey Class on this Saturday morning (November 15) from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

You’ll have a chance to get a handle on holiday desserts and hors d’oeuvres, too. Go with a friend to the Kitchen Garden Cooking School for their Pies and Tarts Cooking Class, also on Saturday morning (November 15), from 10 am to 1:30 pm, so the two of you can swap skills.

Then head back to Carlow Cookery on Wednesday, November 19 from 7 to 9 pm for their Holiday Hors d’oeuvres Cooking Class.

Pie and wine. Of course, if baking isn’t your thing, Terhune Orchards has set aside Saturday and Sunday, November 15-16 as their official Pie Sampling Weekend.

Le Nouveau Crossing VineyardsAnd if we suspect correctly, you don’t make your own wine. Not to worry: Villa Milagro is having their Holiday Wine Release and Crossing Vineyards & Winery is hosting their 2014 Le Noveau Festival this weekend, both on Saturday and Sunday, November 15-16.

It’s the season of giving. Channel your generosity this weekend, starting with an Evening for Kids’ Sake, to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bucks County, on Friday evening from 7:30 to 11 pm at the Fuge in Warminster. Get your tickets here to enjoy a night of live music, special guests, and of course, food.

Saturday night, November 15, we’ve got two fundraisers on our calendar. The first is the Kisses for Kyle Ladybug Ball in Tinicum from 6 to 10 pm. Kisses for Kyle is an organization that helps families with children fighting cancer in the Delaware Valley. The second is a Beef & Beer to benefit the Warwick Fire Company from 7 to 11 pm.

Dine in style. Start tonight, Wednesday, November 12 at Iron Abbey for their Russian River Beer Dinner, a five course meal paired with Russian River brews, from 7 to 9 pm.

Honey Restaurant Doylestown caviarTomorrow night, Thursday, November 13, Honey in Doylestown has their Annual Fall Feast from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The menu for the feast includes twelve courses, including dishes like Coffee Braised Lamb Shank, Castle Valley Mill Polenta, Carmellini Bean Salad, Smoked Vidalia & Black Truffle Vinaigrette and BLiS Golden Brook Trout Caviar, Yukon Gold Potato Chip, Applewood Smoked Sea Salt, Roasted Garlic-Maple Cream Cheese. Wow.

There are also two Wine Dinners slated for this week. The first is the Six Course Wine Dinner at the Jamison Publick House on Wednesday, November 19 from 6 to 8 pm. The second is a five-course Portugese Wine Dinner at the Vintage Grille in Doylestown, also on Wednesday, November 19, from 7 to 9.

Don’t forget breakfast. Take your pick from three firehouse breakfasts this Sunday, November 16. Perkasie Fire Company has theirs from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. Riegelsville Fire Company is serving up eggs, pancakes and more, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. Silverdale Fire Company’s breakfast also starts at 8 am and goes until 1 pm.

Brussels sproutsTo market, to market. Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Apples, apple cider, arugula, Asian greens, basil, beans, beets, bok choi, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chilies, cilantro, collard greens, dill, endive, escarole, fennel, garlic, gourds, head lettuce, herbs, Indian corn, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lima beans, mushrooms, mustard greens, onions, parsley, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkins, radicchio, radishes, red leaf lettuce, rutabaga, salad mix, scallions, shallots, spinach, winter squash, Swiss chard, turnips, and yams.

Most markets will also have: eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans. For a list of all farmers’ markets in Bucks and nearby, go to our food guide here.
