Bucks Food Calendar: May 25, 2015

Farmers Market veggies

We’re changing things up a bit here at Bucks County Taste. Our weekday calendar post will come out on Mondays now, and on Thursdays look for our “Things you gotta do in Bucks this weekend” post. So now you don’t have to wait until the weekend to have fun. There’s plenty to do during the week, too! Check out what’s on this week’s menu, below.

Monday, May 25:

Today is National Wine Day (in addition to Memorial Day!) and Chaddsford Winery’s Tasting Room in Peddler’s Village is offering half-priced wine flights from 12 pm to 4 pm to celebrate. You probably have today off, so head over and take advantage.

Tuesday, May 26: So you’ve started to buy vegetables at the local farmers’ market, at the grocery store, or you’ve taken it up another notch and joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)… but maybe you have no idea what to do with the beautiful variety of produce you get each week! Luckily for you, the Pennypack Farm & Education Center is helping you out by hosting their annual Cooking the CSA Way class at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Horsham at 8:30 pm. Sign up here.

Wednesday, May 27: There’s a new locals night in Feasterville… Rib Night at the Fireside Smokehouse! They’re offering a half rack of ribs and two sides for $8.95 or a full rack and two sides for $12.95. Just make sure to grab plenty of napkins!

Thursday, May 28: Can’t make it to the farmers market over the weekend? No problem. The Lower Makefield Farmers Market, every Thursday (until October 1st) from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, opens this week. To celebrate opening day, there will be live music from Dark Whiskey (a country and bluegrass trio) and fun for the kids in addition to the fabulous local and handmade goods from the vendors.

Stay tuned for the top things to do this weekend, coming on Thursday!

Here’s what you’ll find at area farmers’ markets: Strawberries! Tender greens (kale, chard, spinach), broccoli rabe, lettuce, herbs, scallions, radishes, ramps, spring garlic, garlic scapes, onions, carrots, fennel, leeks, sweet pea shoots, asparagus, rhubarb, mushrooms, and white and sweet potatoes.

Most markets will also have eggs from free-range chickens, grass-fed and pastured meats, preserves, specialty foods, baked goods like breads, cakes, cookies and pastries, cheese and yogurt, cider and juice, sauces locally roasted coffee, and interesting crafts from local artisans.
