Bucks Food Calendar: August 29, 2016

Mojito Cuba Caribe Cook-Off

I can’t help but feel that September is reminiscent of “back-to-school.” Perhaps it’s all the kids suddenly in Staples or the yellow buses that seem to have come out of hibernation — either way, it’s clear that time of year has returned.

This week, there are a few great foodie events sprinkled throughout Bucks County. They’re guaranteed to keep summer spirits high, and they’ll get you through anything, whether that be shuffling kids off to school or getting back to your weekly tasks.

Lovin' Oven

All-you-can-eat crab. Seats for Frenchtown’s Lovin Oven‘s Crabfest are filling up fast. The restaurant’s Crabfest 2016 is Tuesday, August 30 from 6 – 8:30 pm. Long family style tables will be filled with Baltimore style blue crabs from Metropolitan Seafood, sweet corn from Philips Farm, oven fried potatoes, and homemade ice cream sandwiches (Lovin’ Oven suggests: their oatmeal raisin cookies filled with The Bent Spoon Peaches and Cream ice cream).

Call 908.996.7714 to check availability and reserve your spot. The Crabfest is $50 per person. Lovin’ Oven is BYOB, so bring your favorite beer, wine or beverage.

* Lovin’ Oven is located in Hunterdon County, but we figured Bucks County residents love crab enough to take a little drive across county borders!

Appetizer, Comfortfood & Kitchenette
Taco Tuesday!
Come to Comfortfood and Kitchenette for comfort food and a classic movie on “Taco Tuesday.” Tacos are served family style with chips, homemade salsas, pickled veggies. There are endless tacos and a great flick, chef’s choice. Starts at 7 pm and it’s $25 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. Call to find out what movie is playing at 215.847.5707 or check their Facebook page. Past movie choices include Caddyshack, and Blazing Saddles, to name a few.

Mimosas for breakfast. A big cup of orange juice in the morning is one way to start the day. Add a splash of champagne and it’s even better. Looking for good, reasonably priced mimosas? The Hattery Stove & Still at the Doylestown Inn is still serving up $1 mimosa cocktails for breakfast. Their summer special will continue through Labor Day. Enjoy this delicious drink made with Florida orange juice and champagne from 9 am – 11 am.

Good news: General manager Alex Nelinson said that these mimosas will go nicely with just about anything on their breakfast menu.

Brian's

Weeknight’s at Brian’s. Itching for a good meal but don’t want to do the cooking? Come check out the “new” Brian’s in Lambertville on a weeknight and enjoy a great three-course prix fixe meal for just $45. The restaurant was recently renovated, creating more seating and a foyer. Brian’s is BYOB and cash/check only.

The menu changes daily to reflect seasonal, local ingredients. Past dishes included chilled cucumber soup with Blue Point oysters and fresh dill, or seared rare tuna and oxtail quinoa, with roasted wild mushrooms.

Mojito Cuba Caribe Cook-Off

Chef cook-off. One Thursday of every month, Mojito Cuba Caribe Restaurant in New Hope hosts a chef cook-off, similar to the very popular Iron Chef. This Thursday, September 1, starting at 6 pm, there will be a battle between two chefs. The chefs will each create three small plates of their choice, only using the same ingredient in their featured entrée dish.

Customers get to vote on each plate based on taste, creativity, and presentation. The choice to participate in this event is a fixed price $25 which includes six small plates (three by each chef), one house wine, domestic beer, or house mixed drink. Last month’s chef cook-off plates included tequila coconut lime wings, shrimp peach tacos, cilantro cream mahi mahi, mango pineapple crepes, jalapeño popper pasta, and butter almond scoop.

There’s also a chance to win a $10 gift certificate on your next visit to Mojito Cuba Caribe. The winning chef and winner of the gift certificate will be announced when the kitchen closes at 9 pm. Reservations are recommended so call 267.740.2900.
