Bucks Food Calendar: October 3, 2016

Hamiltons Grill Room

I’ve mentioned this before; I love the changing season from summer into fall. And yet, I never seem to be ready for the chill that comes along with October. This weekend was a bit gloomy, but it looks like we’ll get some sunshine this week. Plus, there are a few things to eat (and drink) this week to warm you up. Sip spirits from Hewn Spirits, enjoy a new fall dinner menu, and watch chefs battle it out as they cook a great meal.

Live a healthy life. This group started off as a gluten-free support group, but it is evolving into a gathering of individuals that want to learn how to stay healthy and live a balanced life. The Gluten Free/Healthy Living Support Group will meet this Tuesday, October 4 from 7 – 9 pm. The group meets to share ideas and resources, and everyone is invited. This group meets at Medicine in Balance in Langhorne, PA, plus the event is free. Call 215.741.1601 for more information.

Hewn Spirits
Dinner & Spirits tasting. This Tuesday, October 4 is the last day you can make reservations for the multi-course dinner and spirits tasting featuring Zest Culinary Services and Hewn Spirits. Right now, the menu includes dishes like mosaic of roasted corn-butternut squash soup, rye mussels, and braised short ribs with Hewn Bourbon BBQ sauce. The menu is subject to change.

The dinner costs $95 per person. Get tickets online through EventBrite or by calling the Hewn Spirits store at 267.544.0720, or stop into their tasting room in Peddler’s Village, where the event is being held. For this dinner, please allow three hours for the completion of the meal.

Schnitzel, Driftless AppetiteOn Wednesday, we eat schnitzel.  Join the United German Hungarians in Bensalem for a Schnitzel Night at the club, every first Wednesday of the month. Dinner is $11 for adults and $5 for children, dessert is available for purchase, and there is a fully stocked cash bar. You also get two side dishes (which change every month) plus a salad, bread and butter, coffee or tea. The meal includes schnitzel (pork), red cabbage, and spaetzle (dumplings). The dinner begins at 5:30 pm.

New chef in town. Here’s another tidbit for you: The Raven Restaurant in New Hope welcomes their new chef, Larry Brown. Check out what he is cooking up this month by stopping in for dinner or happy hour. Dinner reservations are strongly suggested. You can also enjoy the Raven’s happy hour menu Monday through Friday from 5 – 7 pm. Come see what everyone is talking about.

Mojito Cuba Caribe

Chef cook-off. One Thursday of every month, Mojito Cuba Caribe Restaurant in New Hope hosts a chef cook-off, similar to the very popular Iron Chef. This Thursday, starting at 6 pm, there will be a battle between two chefs. The chefs will each create three small plates of their choice, only using the same ingredient in their featured entrée dish.

Customers get to vote on each plate based on taste, creativity, and presentation for a fixed price of $25, which includes six small plates (three by each chef), one house wine, domestic beer, or house mixed drink. Last month’s chef cook-off plates included tequila coconut lime wings, shrimp peach tacos, cilantro cream Mahi Mahi, mango pineapple crepes, jalapeño popper pasta, and butter almond scoop.

There’s also a chance to win a $10 gift certificate on your next visit to Mojito Cuba Caribe. The winning chef and winner of the gift certificate will be announced when the kitchen closes at 9 pm. Reservations are recommended so call 267.740.2900.

Hamiltons Grill Room

Fall food has arrived! See what’s new for lunch and dinner at Hamilton’s Grill Room this fall. Chef Mark Miller’s dinner menu includes new items like steamed clams with pancetta and lucina olives, grilled rack of lamb with mustard crust, and a house favorite: grilled whole Maine lobster with pomme frites. Check out the full menu here and reserve online with Open Table or by calling 609.397.4343.

On the radar…

  • Jazz on the Farm: The Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse presents the Mitchell Cheng Trio on Sunday, October 9 from 1 – 4 pm. Mitchell Cheng is a pianist and composer born right here in Bucks County. Reservations are recommended so burgers and pork sandwiches can be reserved in advance. There will be a tent with tables with limited seating, and lawn chairs are recommended. The event is BYOB as well. Save your spot here.
