Whiskey convention

Pennsylvania spirits and beer events

If you love whiskey—or want to learn more about whiskey—clear your calendar. This week on Thursday, March 23, the Pennsylvania Spirits Convention, the first and largest of its kind, will take over the Hall of Fame Club at Citizens Bank Park, paying homage to Pennsylvania spirits and the farmers, craftsmen and distillers behind them.

The Grand Tasting Event will feature 110 craft spirits from more than 30 craft-spirit distillers; specialty cocktails made by Philadelphia’s best bartenders; entertaining and educational discussion forums; artisans and craft vendors; local farmers, grain producers, and more.

Pssst. We’ve got a deal for Bucks County Taste fans. Click here for a major discount off the ticket price.

But wait, there’s more. Friday, March 24 is the American Whiskey Convention, which is the largest American whiskey event of its kind in the US. Both events take place at the Hall of Fame Club at Citizens Bank Park.

You can read all about both events, and why whiskey is important to local farming in our post, Pennsylvania whiskey and local farms.

Great Barn Brewery and Chris Bowen; Bucks county beer

The Great Barn Brewery in Kintersville has hired internationally known beer historian and multi-award winning brewer, Christopher Bowen to the position of Head Brewer and Director of Production.

Haven’t heard of the Great Barn Brewery? You will soon. They are in production and planning a tap-room in New Hope in June. The brewery sits on a family owned farm and uses grain grown right on the farm for its beers.

Bowen is a beer adventurist. He recreates old recipes from the past, researching the methods and ingredients, and weaves beer’s past into the present day tastes and stories.

In 2007, Bowen competed in the ProAm competition at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, winning the prestigious “Gold Medal” for a historic recipe of an early English Style, India Pale Ale. Since his first win in 2007, he has gone on to win medals in 2011, 2013, and another gold medal in 2014. Bowen has appeared in countless newspaper, magazine, and web articles worldwide for his work on beer history and adventure.

Whiskey and wine

Dad’s Hat Rye founders Herman C. Mihalich and John S. Cooper were nominated as semifinalists for The James Beard Foundation Awards in the category of “Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional.” This award is presented annually by the James Beard Foundation in recognition of excellence in cuisine, culinary writing, and culinary education in the United States. This award is the “Oscars of Food.”

Speaking of Dad’s Hat whiskey, their Straight Rye is becoming a big hit at fine bars and liquor stores. This tasty whiskey is distilled farm-to-bottle in Pennsylvania with locally harvested grain and aged for at least three years. Learn more about Dad’s Hat’s spirits here.

Peace Valley WineBeer and wine? You know they have beer but did you know that Bucks County Brewery now offers locally produced wines by the glass? They are currently serving three great wines from Peace Valley Winery in Chalfont: Traminette, a moderately dry white wine; New Britain Red, a moderately dry full-bodied red wine; and New Britain Rose, a light bodied semi-dry light red wine.

Food, beer, and coffee?

The Vault Golden Dilemma and New Zealand IPA

Introducing Pretty Bird Nitro Coffee. Vault Brewing Company has a few cans left from its late-March release, like their four-packs of Golden Dilemma or New Zealand IPA.

The brewery also debuted Pretty Bird’s first packaged product, the Nitro Cold Brew Coffee. Since they still have some left, the brewery adjusted its Pretty Bird Coffee promotion; they’re throwing in a Nitro Cold Brew four-pack for every four 4-packs of beer purchased while supplies last. Coffee cans may also be purchased separately for $12 a pack.
