Bucks Food Calendar: September 24, 2014

Pretty fall colors

Hope you’re all recovered from the four beer festivals last weekend, because you need to tap into your energy reserves to keep up with this weekend’s many harvest festivals, plus a handful of quirky wine and beer tastings.

Gone are the days of the basic wine or beer tasting. The breweries, vineyards and distilleries of Bucks County are getting creative. Some of them don’t even require that you leave your couch to join in on the fun.

Wine & SpiritsCross over to the other side by tasting some wine, savoring some desserts and getting a tarot card reading at Crossing Vineyards and Winery’s “Wine & Spirits” Tarot Card Reading and Wine Tasting from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday.

Also on Thursday evening, celebrate the harvest season by packing your basket and heading to Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, NJ to enjoy a Twilight Picnic with the Winemaker, Cameron Stark, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

If you want to stay in on Thursday, but still learn about wine, you can tune in to Virtual Vines, an online wine tasting class brought to you by Old York Cellars. Open up your laptop and take it easy on the couch with Old York Cellar’s 2013 Vidal Blanc and their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, from 7 to 8 pm. Bust out your sweat pants and enjoy!

936076_686790784744082_3172492336825617502_nFinally, sip some Rye Whiskey and enjoy some Americana music at An Evening with Tim Easton at Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey Distillery in Bristol on Saturday night at 8 pm (doors open at 7 pm).

Okay, okay. That’s a lot of drinking. There’s plenty more to do! Since it’s now officially fall, it’s fitting that Harvest festivals are taking over the weekend.

For the whole family. Start with Autumn Fest at Shady Brook Farm this Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Shady Brook Farm’s sister location at the Market at DelVal also has fun slated for Saturday with their Monster Pumpkin contest, 11 am to 4 pm. Both events have all the traditional trappings of fall festivals: wagon rides, apples, pumpkins, plus fun and games to keep the kids entertained.

Family Fun Weekends at Terhune Orchards kick off for the season this Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Tour the Child in Pumpkins at Terhune Orchardsadventure barn, get lost in the corn maze, try a variety of apple and pumpkin goodies, and pick your own pumpkins and apples.

The annual New Hope Arts & Crafts Festival will be set up in the New Hope-Solebury High School parking lot this Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm.

Instead of the typical Harvest festival, Snipes Farm and Education Center is inviting folks to show off their own cooking skills with a Soup Cook-Off from 11 am – 1 pm on Saturday and an Apple Dessert Bake-Off at the same times on Sunday. Winners get publicity and a prize.

For grown-ups. Sample the specialties of some of New Jersey’s best chefs and watch them at work at the Wine and Food Festival at Alba Vineyard & Winery this Saturday from 12 to 5 pm. While you’re learning from the best chefs in the state, sample some wine and enjoy the live music provided by the Eric Mintel Quartet.

Old York Cellars is hosting its own Harvest Festival, also this Saturday from 12 to 5 pm. On the schedule: live music, vineyard and winery tours, hayrides, bee tours, arts and craft vendors, kids activities and more.

And in Stockton, NJ, the 21st Annual Wine Tasting at the Stockton Firehouse takes place this Saturday from 7 to 10 pm. Phillips Fine Wines & Spirits, the fine liquor and wine store just across the street, helps with this popular event. Call them at 609.397.1162 to see if tickets are still available ($60 pp).

Old York Cellars Wagon Ride
