And if you’re about to complain that strawberries aren’t “local” yet, Shady Brook Farm reports that their strawberries will be ready for “pick-your-own” this Monday. For an update on their crops, call 215.968.1670.

To market, to market. The Wrightstown Farmers’ Market opens this Saturday, May 1st with Personal Chef Karen McGinn giving cooking demonstrations on spring vegetables. The New Hope Farmers’ Market starts their season this Thursday, May 6th, with Chef David Zukerman of Earl’s Bucks County providing a cooking demo. And of course the Doylestown Farmers’ Market started a few Saturdays ago. Look for spring greens – spinach, lettuce – and radishes, rhubarb, herbs and bedding plants. Market products also include flowers; pastured beef, chicken and lamb; cheeses and yogurt from pastured animals; pastured eggs; bread and baked goods; preserved products; handmade soaps and lotions; honey, maple syrup and beeswax candles; organic, fair trade, locally roasted coffees; and prepared foods.

Fresh produce for those in need. The Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, who run the Wrightstown Market, is partnering with the Bucks County Housing Group and market shoppers to provide fresh produce to the Housing Group’s food pantry on Durham Rd. in Penndel. They are inviting shoppers to purchase fresh produce items at the market and donate them. The (tax deductible) produce donations will be collected at the Foodshed Alliance table and delivered at the end of the market each Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help with delivery too. See the Foodshed Alliance table at the market for more information.

Sorry, it’s sold out). What a great weekend to sample some local wine – sun, warmth, sitting outside sipping wine. Does it get any better?

The Doylestown Food Club is becoming the Doylestown Food Co-Op…and you can be part of the process. The five month old Doylestown Food Club, a collection of 50 households who buy locally produced goods and produce collectively is moving quickly towards a co-op structure. This Sunday, May 2, from 2 – 4 pm, and Thursday, May 27, from 7:30 – 9:30 pm, the Food Club will hold Town Hall meetings to gather input and answer questions about the development of the co-op. If you are at all interested, please come! You can also get on the Food Club/Co-op’s email list to stay in the loop.

As some of you may know from our tweets Monday night, Mark and I attended the preview party for the “new” Earl’s restaurant in Lahaska (Peddler’s Village).

First, let’s get the whole price thing out of the way. Most people I know (“locals”) have avoided Earl’s for the last few years due to a rather expensive menu and bar. Good, interesting food but…

So if that’s been keeping you away, it’s safe to come back. Both the menu and the price point have changed – the former toward an all-day, “family-friendly” yet still sophisticated selection, and the latter downward, to a reasonably priced and varied choice of items (tapas, small dishes, salads, sandwiches and entrees).

I’m not going to do a traditional restaurant review of the food. As we’ve mentioned, we don’t see ourselves as critics. That said, we have eaten our share of good food (!) and we enjoyed the samples of the new menu served at the preview party. It was an interesting variety of tastes, flavors and influences, fresh, and beautifully presented [see the photos]. And, need I say again, at a reasonable price for the ingredients, preparation and service.

Of most interest to me is the local food connection that Earl’s – now called Earl’s Bucks County – is aiming for. General Manager David Zukerman is focused on bringing in local ingredients and doing great things with them.

And he’s done his homework. David has spent the last six months or so visiting local farm markets in Bucks and nearby, talking with food producers, meeting vendors and tasting. From my knowledge of local food sources, and from chatting with David last night, he’s obviously gotten around. He’s already bringing in some of these products and with a menu that will change with the seasons, plans to bring in more when the growing season starts. For example, you’ll see on the menu right now a cheese plate with local cheeses from Valley Shepherd Creamery, Cherry Grove Farm and Bobolink Dairy Farm, and a Speck Ham dish with apple marmalade made from Solebury Orchard apples. One of the entrees is an olive-brined chicken from Bolton Farms. You’ll also see Blue Moon Acres greens popping up here and there.

These, you might say, are the “slam-dunks.” Kind of easy local sources to go with. But it is February, after all. There’s not a lot growing around here. It will be interesting to see how the menu continues to evolve as the seasons change. David says he is still working on his beef sources, although his fish purveyor is sending him only sustainable seafood. There are also plans to grow a restaurant garden on the property and serve guests at a “Chef’s Table” al fresco.

The local/organic/sustainable approach doesn’t stop at the food. Earl’s wine list has been revamped to include some organic, sustainably grown wines and some local wines. A new feature will be a “Local Pour” – a glass of local Bucks County or Pennsylvania wine, always available, and starting with some of Chaddsford Winery’s best. And if you’re watching your budget, come to Earl’s on a Tuesday night with your own bottle. They’ll be happy to open it with no corkage fee, and will also offer 25% off wine on the restaurant’s list. They are even offering some organic alcohol at the bar – 360 Vodka - and organic tequila and gin (who knew?).

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the service and ambiance at Earl’s. During the three weeks the restaurant was closed for renovations, the staff – many of them long-time employees – received training in the new menu, seeing how the food was prepared and getting to taste everything. They’re happy to describe any dish, and they do it with relish (no pun intended). In fact, in addition to a warm, friendly atmosphere, there is a palpable excitement among the staff – like they can’t wait to open the new Earl’s and start sharing the good stuff.

For starters, The Lambertville-New Hope Winter Festival, now in it’s 12th year is in full swing. I won’t go into great detail – see their Web site for a schedule of events – but there is lots to do and eat, including a Beef n’Brew at Triumph Brewing Co. (still tickets left!) on Saturday from 2-4:30 pm.

Firehouse and pancake breakfasts all around, including one in Plumsteadville, Haycock, Warrington and at the New Hope-Solebury High School.
Do your weekly food shopping at the Stockton Indoor Market on Saturday or Sunday. Pick up some freshly baked bread, farm-fresh cheese, vegetables, organic coffee, yummy pastries, fresh fish and, even, artisanal ice cream.

Coming up next weekend? How about a gourmet vegetarian dinner at the Kindle Cafe, or eating chili to support Planned Parenthood at the Choice Chili Cook-off? Or stop in at the Chaddsford Winery Tasting Room in Peddlers Village for their February Fusion, pairing gourmet chocolate and wine.
The chance to meet Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Lewis and Clark, and Betsy Ross doesn’t come along very often. Nor does the opportunity to dine on Colonial-style foods.

But opportunity knocks each January in Bucks County, when the Cock ‘N Bull Restaurant in Peddlers Village reprises its Evenings in the Colonial Kitchen. The special dinners began this past Monday, January 4th and continue every Monday through March 29th.

This is the 31st season for the Colonial Kitchen, and actors from the American Historical Theatre take the parts of a variety of historic characters, playing usually two characters each night. They walk around the dining room in full Colonial dress and engage diners who are enjoying Queen Anne’s Pye (chicken pot pie, colonial-style), jambalaya, New England-style cod, boiled brisket of beef, chicken breast with sausage stuffing, Madeira ham and roast pork with sauerkraut.

It’s a fun experience and a chance to shake off the post-holiday winter doldrums. Diners can pick two entrees to try if they wish, plus they receive soup, a salad and dessert for a prix fixe $19.95 for adults and $10.95 for children 10 and younger.

More history is on display in the restaurant foyer, where re-enactors cook fish on a wooden plank, bake pie in a Dutch oven and roast beef on a spit. They also field questions about the cooking practices of the late 18th century.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (215) 794-4000.

Here is the schedule for appearances by the Colonial personalities; choose your favorite in history:

Jan. 4 – Benjamin Franklin and John Hancock
Jan. 11 – Soldier and statesman the Marquis de Lafayette and Baron Von Steuben, who trained American troops for Gen. Washington
Jan. 18 – Sail maker and Revolutionary War powder boy James Forten and flagmaker Betsy Ross
Jan. 25 – Patriot/orator Patrick Henry and Continental Congressman James Wilson
Feb. 22 – President John Adams and his wife Abigail
March 1 – Philadelphia artist Charles Willson Peale and his wife Sarah
March 8 – Pirate Anne Bonney and pirate captive Mary Reed
March 15 – Suffragette Susan B. Anthony and an indentured servant

There is an UPDATE for this post for 2010. Click here.

It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You can go out for Thanksgiving instead of making it at home. In fact, so many people are doing it these days that more and more restaurants are staying open and offering prix fixe deals for the day. Some places are also offering “Turkey To Go,” so you can bring the whole meal home. Your guests need never know…

I did a little bit of research and found seventeen Bucks County restaurants (and three in Jersey) open with Thanksgiving special menus. There are probably more.
But there is so much fun stuff going on this weekend that I simply had to write about it. I only wish we were well enough to go to some of the events! Delaware Valley newcomer Chef/Owner Vincent Peterson has started a weekly gourmet vegetarian dinner in Lambertville every Friday night at Rojo’s Roastery. We haven’t gotten there yet but the menus look delicious. Using local produce and products for a prix fixe $25 dinner, BYOB.

Apples, apples, apples. There are two festivals celebrating apples this weekend in Bucks County. The Riegelsville Community Fire Company — the same folks who put on such a great breakfast once a month — will be hosting the Apple Fest in Riegelsville on Saturday, November 7th from 10 am to 3 pm. Peddler’s Village in Lahaska also has a fun weekend planned for their 38th Annual Apple Festival, featuring local apple orchards, antique cider press demonstrations, authentic apple butter production, a variety of apple treats from apple dumplings to apple fritters, and apple pie eating contests. Festivities begin at 10 am and go until 6 pm.

What’s for breakfast…and dinner? From Hartsville (Warminster), to Plumsteadville, to Upper Black Eddy and Silverdale, you’ve got your choice of hot breakfasts at various firehouses and a grange this weekend. Yum. And for dinner, there’s a host (no pun intended) of church suppers in Chalfont, Pleasant Valley and Warrington. See our calendar for details.

Also, the Saucon Valley Farmers’ Market in Hellertown stays open on Sundays through November 22nd. Stock up on vegetables for the winter and for your Thanksgiving meal. Also coming…an indoor farmers’ market in Stockton, set to open Thanksgiving weekend. Stay tuned for more details.

It’s been a busy week. We were thrilled at the wonderful article this past Wednesday by Betty Cichy in the Bucks County Courier Times /Intelligencer about Bucks County Taste. We were even more blown away by the site “hits” we got. Those of you who checked us out for the first time – thank you, thank you, thank you. And please come back. Be sure to tell us what you’d like to see on Bucks County Taste in the future. We’ve got lots in the works – interviews, reviews, interactive maps of food places in Bucks and more.

But…ah, the weekend is here with unseasonably comfortable weather. Tomorrow looks beautiful so get out and enjoy the sunshine and low humidity. Since we now have our Food Events in Bucks County calendar more easily accessible on the site, I won’t be doing as detailed a review of weekend events. Everything you need to know is just one click away now.

Tonight there are several fun events going on. Mark Cosgrove and Friends will be playing at Crossing Vineyards and Winery in Washington Crossing. Throw together a picnic dinner, buy some wine and sit back and enjoy some great blue grass music. Starts at 7 pm.

Brad’s Raw Chips is having another one of its now famous Chip Parties at the R.A.T. Gallery in Gardenville from 7 pm to whenever. Munch, munch, crunch…and it’s good for you too!

Peaches seem to be dominating the weekend. Great peaches are available everywhere. Try the local farmers’ markets as well as these local producers: Bechdolts Orchard (Hellertown), Fairview Farm (Pineville), Lapinski Farm (Dublin), Manoff’s (Solebury), Penn Vermont Fruit Farm (Bedminster), Shady Brook Farm (Yardley), Solebury Orchards (Solebury), Solly’s Farm Market (Ivyland), Styer Orchard (Langhorne), and Tall Pine Farm (Wrightstown).

Two peachy events are also taking place on Sunday. Shady Brook Farm is putting on a Peach Festival as part of their Sunday Funday series, from 12 Noon to 4 pm. There’s also a Peach Festival at the Bristol Cultural and Historical Foundation from 3 pm to 6 pm in Bristol.

Peddler’s Village is putting on a village-wide Summer Food & Fun Fair & Sidewalk Sale. The Village will have summer foods sizzling on the grill and plenty of live entertainment. It will also be Peddler’s Village First Annual Community Days from noon to 4 pm each day on the Street Road Green, with nonprofit organizations exhibiting and sharing information.

Have a wonderful, safe weekend.

It’s hot and humid as I write this. I guess summer is finally here. No more squeaking by with this lovely San Diego-type weather we’ve been enjoying. I’ve been telling everyone that it will continue to be a cooler summer, and we are taking credit for it. Why? Because we recently installed two new air conditioners in our “mid-century modern” home (the original two got fried by a power surge). See? If y’all chip in, we’ll buy a snow blower to guarantee a light winter.

The other way I know summer is really here is that I’ve noticed the number of calendar events has decreased – or maybe I’m not working hard enough to find them. Either way, it’s a sign that things are slowing down.

But there are still some interesting things going on. This week, from Tuesday, July 21st through Sunday, July 26th, SEE, a Lambertville-based community organization, is sponsoring the Local Harvest Restaurant Week in Lambertville and New Hope. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about sustainability – in our society, environment and economy (SEE) – while eating great local food!

With cooperation from local restaurants, farms, food producers, and Zone 7 (a local foods distribution business), SEE is bringing the best of the region’s local harvest to local restaurant tables. If you eat at one of the participating restaurants, you’ll be able to enjoy dishes specially prepared for the event using the finest local ingredients. Check out SEE’s website for more information about their mission, more details about the restaurant week, and a list of participating restaurants (which includes practically all of the good ones in Lambertville).

And I’ve got a “Save The Date” for your calendars. The Heritage Conservancy is hosting a Farm-to-Table Dinner on Saturday, August 1st. I’ll give you more details as we get closer but the catering will be done by Soup to Nuts Caterers and Earl’s Restaurant in Peddler’s Village, which recently changed its menu and concept to focus on local, farm-fresh ingredients. Price will be $45 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Heritage Conservancy, a land conservation organization here in Bucks County. It will be held at the historic Lindsay Farm in Warminster.

Here’s the run-down for the weekend. Check out our online calendar, Food Events in Bucks County for more details on any of the events below. Have a sweet, cool weekend.
